Picking a name for your baby can be exciting and can be stressful at the same time. Some people are pressured by their parents or best friends to name their baby after them. Some people just can’t decide on a name with so many names to choose from. Remember that this child is your child and you and your spouse will make the final decision of the name.

There really are a lot of things you should consider when picking a name for your child. You may not know the gender and may have to plan on picking two names, one for a girl and one for a boy. Actually picking two different gender names even though you may know the gender is a good idea because there have been times when the ultrasound have been wrong.

Actually you do not have to have settled on a name before you leave the hospital, though it is best. Each state has different time tables so make sure you check with your state’s State Department of Vital Records. Some states allow you up to 45 days to amend your child’s birth certificate which may say Baby Johnson.

Everyone has their own reason for choosing a name. Some may pick a name based on their parents or other relatives or their favorite movie star. Others may base the name on an athlete or a singer. Some people base the name on a meaning or a religious figure.

You got nine plus months to choose a name or names, to be safe, so don’t feel that you have to rush. The name you pick may sound good to you for your baby, but remember that baby will grow up and go to school some day. There are some things to consider to make sure your child will not have a hard time at elementary school, kids can be mean.

Two way gender names like Stacey, Leslie or Corey may be no problem. But think about it if a male child had the name Stacy and there was a female child with the same name in the same grade or in the same class. It may give rise to teasing, and it may go on for years.

Some parents may want to give their baby a unique name but it may be hard to pronounce or may be cute for a baby but not for a ten year old. Initials are something to consider though many parents don’t even think about it. For instance, if your child’s name was Alan Stephen Smith, sounds fine, but a mean child would pick up on it right away.

Actually anything close can be picked by a mean spirited immature kid like, Scott Harvey Tucker. To an adult it sounds just fine. Also think about nick names for the name like Richard could be called Dick

When you think you got a name say it out loud over and over. Write it down and look at it. Look at the spelling and look at the initials. Picture not only you calling your baby cuddled in your arms, but also the child’s elementary school classmates. Sad but true, kids can be very mean when they are immature and not even know the hurt and pain they are causing. Those incidents can have long lasting effects on your child like feeling hurt and embarrassment, low self esteem, feeling like an outcast, and even built up anger on the inside.

A name is a name but it can impact the way your child grows up and sees the world, really. I have one of those two way gender names and had to go through a lot, but thank God I had a good sense of humor and could laugh it off easily on the outside, though it really hurt on the inside.

Sadly I have seen kids not being able to take the teasing and end up getting into fights everyday and start growing a mean streak, then eventually quitting school. Lucky for me after getting over the hurt from the immature kids, which took awhile, I actually gained their respect by being able to take it with a grain of salt and being able to laugh with them. No more teasing after that.

So have fun thinking of a good name for your child but really when you settle on a name check it out. Check it out good. Consider the name carefully and be prepared to pick another name if you think the one you chose some how could cause some pain.
