The parents of a ten-month-old boy who died after falling out of the family vehicle spoke only to Eyewitness News 4 on Friday.
Baby Nico’s parents, Nicole Matson and Michael Ortega say their baby’s death was a terrible accident. Little Nico, by his family’s account, was a happy baby who’s favorite word was no.
His mother Nichole Matson says Thursday evening, after returning from a family vacation, she and her two children loaded up into the family’s SUV. She was in the driver’s side with her foot on the break and the SUV in reverse, waiting for Nico’s dad Michael to return with the baby’s car seat.
Nico was in the back seat with his 6-year-old sister. Matson says when Michael reached for the door she realized the baby was up against the door and she screamed for Michael not to open it but the window was rolled and Michael couldn’t hear her. When the door opened Nico fell and the unthinkable happened.
Nico’s distraught father explains, “That’s when Nicole went to reach for him and the car pulled me out into the street. As I picked my self up, I went and ran out to him in the street. He lay motionless just looking straight up into the sky with his eyes open. I tried to pick him up and give him CPR- to do
