Fashion Show | Uganda: Islamic Wear Redefined At IDH Fashion Show


IDH is the global authorised distributor of Silk Route’s vibrant mix of urban, sporty, casual and elegant Islamic wear with branches in USA, Russia, Nigeria, Egypt and now the East African region (Nairobi and Kampala).

It was a different affair from the fashion shows we are used to. There was no alcohol served and the Kampala socialites who turn up at events dressed skimpily were absent. I guess you are thinking, “finally a breath of freshness.” So is everybody who turned up.

For starters, a Hijab is actually the head wrap and the Jilbab is the whole outfit though most people call the whole outfit the Hijab. These were showcased in two categories; casual and office wear in fabrics like silk, pure cotton and denim. The casual collection showed how Muslim women can fuse modesty with fashion to suit their contemporary lifestyle needs allowing them to express their special identity.

And who knew that the Jilbab (long dress) could be so sporty? The office collection was another eye-opener because it showed that the Jilbab has variety in design and colours and you could look classy and modest throughout the week. Another beauty is that IDH stocks fresh designs every season; that is after three or four months.

“We change our stock in an interval of three months which makes it hard to find the same Jilbab with many people on the street,” said IDH’s director Aziz Baguma.

Normally, I am very picky when I attend fashion shows but I could not find anything to pick on this one. The Hadith recitation and music during the intervals instead of performing artistes who lip-sync to their own music was a welcome change.
