Garden Accessories | Don’t Be Afraid To Accessorize In The Garden
On a recent stroll around my neighborhood, I was struck by how many people decorate their landscapes. The types of garden accessories are as diverse as those for our home’s interior and help define a personal style. Some accessories are functional while others are purely decorative.
Some functional accessories include:
> Birdbaths: They come in a variety of materials, including plastic, metal, ceramic and stone. I saw some that were strictly functional and others that were very elaborate.
> Flowerpots: They can make their own statement or can fade into the background to let the plants be the star. They come in a range of sizes, colors and materials. The newer resin pots have the added bonus of being lightweight so they can be moved more easily.
> Arbors, trellises and other plant supports: These items run the gamut of design. At the Gardens on Spring Creek, 2145 Centre, Ave., Fort Collins, one piece of our ARTiculture exhibit, called the O’Keefe Inspired Fence Panel by local artist Erik Bennet, is a unique trellis that combines beauty and function. In my garden, I have a large metal obelisk onto which I am training a clematis. Simpler plant supports include plant ladders and stakes that are more functional in nature.
> Stepping-stones: They can be handmade creations to reflect your own personal design. Cast concrete topped with mosaic tiles or stones add whimsy and color to a pathways or garden beds.
