I confess that on any given golden September afternoon, I would rather read a book in my backyard than fight crowds. So I might not be the typical Bumbershoot fan. Still, I found some interesting literary events in the schedule, interspersed with panels on veganism and the life and times of rock groupie Pamela Des Barres.
Bumbershoot groups all its quasiliterary offerings under the rubric “Words Ideas.”

Christopher Rice : The son of vampire novelist Anne Rice discusses what it’s like to grow up with a mom who writes weird, incredibly successful vampire novels, and how it’s affected his own writing life. Rice is the author of five novels, including “A Density of Souls,” “The Snow Garden,” “Light Before Day,” “Blind Fall,” and “The Moonlit Earth.” 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Words Ideas Stage, Leo K. Theatre.
Colin Meloy and Carson Ellis: Meloy is lead singer of the band the Decemberists. Ellis is a graphic designer and illustrator. The two, husband and wife, discuss how they combined their skills for a new series of children’s books. First in the series: “Wildwood,” about a young girl whose brother is abducted by a murder of crows and taken to the Impassible Wilderness, which sounds a bit like Narnia in the middle of Portland. 7 p.m. Saturday, Words Ideas Stage, Leo K. Theatre.
“From Music to Literature” : Three panelists with ties to both music and literature talk about what happens when they converge. Panelists include Nathan Larson , author of “The Dewey Decimal System” and former lead guitarist for Shudder to Think, who worked on the music for the films “Boys Don’t Cry, ” “Dirty Pretty
