Garden Center | Family-owned Garden Center Has Strong Local Roots
Ganim Garden Center in Fairfield is a pocket of paradise for any gardener.
The 10-acre property, at 320 Kings Highway Cutoff, is full of annuals and perennials, small ornamental trees and shrubs.
The full-service garden center opened in 1938 in Bridgeport as a fruit stand by John Ganim, who sold seasonal flowers and fruits, pumpkins and Christmas trees. After the construction of the Route 8/25 highway connector, the garden center moved from its North Avenue location to its present site.
Seventy years later, his son, Lee Ganim, now runs the family-owned business.
“I was five years old when I started working at Ganim’s Outdoor Market,” Ganim said. “I went to school for horticulture at UConn because I love this business.” Ganim has the help of his son Austin Ganim, who runs his own landscaping business out of the garden center, and daughter, Merrilee Ganim , who is in charge of the floral department.
“I enjoy working with my family,” Merrilee Ganim said. “There are not a lot of family-owned garden centers around.” Creating bouquets, vases, and centerpieces, Ganim’s Florist has access to annuals, perennials, tropicals, and shrubs in addition to cut flowers.
“People just can’t say enough about our florist. I really enjoy seeing their faces when you put something together,” Merrilee Ganim said.
