Garden Center | Tax Holiday Moves Merchandise In Needham
For many in Needham, last weekend’s Massachusetts sales tax holiday means their winter may go a little easier.
For the seventh consecutive year, Massachusetts declared a two-day exemption on the commonwealth’s 6.25-percent sales tax for purchases with price tags under $2,500. Residents took that opportunity to finally buy the snow-throwers they’ve been eying.
“The no sales tax weekends usually help a little bit,” said Garrett Graham Sr., whose son owns the Needham Garden Center on Chestnut Street. “But because of the terrible winter, it helped a little more.”
The Garden Center reminded customers of the holiday on its website and Graham said they flocked in to purchase the snow-throwers, which range in price between about $500 and $2,000 at the Garden Center. Despite the down economy, he said, customers were wary of another winter like last, when their driveways were regularly plowed in.
It was a similar scene at Harvey’s Hardware on Great Plain Avenue. Owner Gary Katz said customers came primarily for snow-throwers and gas grills.
“We usually see a bump [from the sales tax holiday],” Katz said. “Customers were definitely well-informed about it. They said ‘We’ve waited a few weeks, a month, a couple of months’” to make the larger purchases during the Aug. 13 and 14 holiday.
Real Roy, whose wife Sheila Ryan Roy owns Boston Consignment, on Highland Avenue, said they sell a number of higher-priced items from furniture to jewelry to art, and customers were quick to take advantage of the exemption.
