Garden Decor | Nonprofit Brevard Retail Shop Carries Home And Garden Decor
But there’s another definition that perfectly describes a Brevard retail shop.
“Something additional or unexpected that is pleasing or valuable.”
Gravy, which donates profits to the local Boys Girls Club, is 70 vendors selling a surprising selection of home and garden decor, funky “mismatched” socks, children’s backpacks, handmade fly-fishing equipment and much more.
“Gravy is the brainchild of a group of creative and proactive women,” said Sandi Hosey, manager of the downtown Brevard store that opened five years ago. “Sales are up this year, which is great, given the economy.”
In the past five years, the store has raised $15,000 to $18,000 a year for the Boys Girls Club, which launched its Transylvania County clubhouse in 2000.
“We have vendors who chose to sell here specifically because this shop supports the club,” said Cindy Platt, a store volunteer who also served on the original steering committee.
“There are people who shop here first for the same reason and because they like to shop,” Platt said.
The motivation of Gravy’s five-woman steering committee centered on opening a store to benefit the local Boys Girls Club, without using a thrift or resale store model.
Inspired by Asheville’s Screen Door, an antiques, garden and home retail shop, the women attracted vendors and prepared a West Main Street retail space for business.
“One day they were talking about how the store would be gravy for the club, and looked up the meaning in the dictionary,” Hosey said.
Hence the name, displayed in big letters along with the alternate definition above Gravy’s cash register.
Beth Womble designed the store’s interior, which is painted in light, sunny colors and has the flow of a good museum layout with well-placed partitions and interior walls.
“Because Brevard is rich with artistic talent, they wanted to tap into that,” Hosey said of women who were inspired to start the store.
