Garden Design | Choosing Garden Furniture

Gardens add value to a property not just because they increase the amount of land on offer, but because they are the ideal environment in which to relax, play and socialise.  A well-tended and attractive garden is the perfect place to spend time; be it alone or with your family, gardens offer a serenity to which any room in a house simply cannot compare.

As well as a nearly trimmed lawn, perhaps a pond and anything from a smattering to an abundance of beautiful flowers, another feature that can make your garden an even more inviting place is a collection of Garden furniture.  Depending on what kind of furniture you invest in, you can turn your garden from a simple aesthetic extension of the house into an area ideally suited for eating, playing or just relaxing in the sunshine.  As nice as it can be to sit on the grass, a table and chairs allow you to take meals outside as well, or barbeque in garden and not have to worry about repeated trips bringing food into and out of the house.

Although choosing Garden furniture is primarily down to personal preference, there are a few things you should bear in mind when making your decision.  For one thing, different types of furniture will be more or less suitable for your garden depending on where you live.  If you live near the coast, for example, you will have to consider the impact of a wet, salty atmosphere on whatever furniture you are considering.  In these conditions iron furniture will rust very quickly, but stainless steel furniture will survive for years.  If stainless steel is too expensive, aluminium garden furniture is a suitable alternative, but will have to be treated to withstand the conditions.

No matter where you live in the UK, your garden furniture should be capable of withstanding the elements of typical British weather; low temperatures, lots of rain and occasional snow.  In conditions like these, the best furniture will be exceptionally durable, rust-proof and heavy enough that it won’t get blow around in a storm.  Even when stored away, garden furniture is still at risk from cracking and breaking in the cold, so it is never wise to skimp on quality when considering what to invest in.

Of course, even if you intend to leave your garden furniture out all year long, there will probably be times when you want to move it around.  Whether it be a family gathering, a party or just a Sunday barbeque, the chances are you’ll want to be able to shift the chairs and tables around to suit the occasion, without pulling a muscle.  To this extent, do consider the weight of the furniture before you invest; wrought iron furniture is about as heavy as it comes, where some kinds of aluminium and plastic are so light that they can be blown away in a stiff breeze!  A good combination is durable cast aluminium frames with hollow extensions; these are tough pieces of furniture that aren’t as heavy as those with solid cast legs.

When making the final decisions regarding garden furniture, do also consider the style and design of the furniture with respect to your house and garden.  Ultra-modern furnishings may look very out of place in an otherwise old fashioned setting.  Conversely, some combinations of contemporary and traditional designs work very well; each garden is different, so make sure you consider every aspect of yours before you make a final decision.
