Garden Lawn | Beat The Heat With Shade, Songs At Sunflower

Fall springs upon Athens quickly, so go out and enjoy this warm weather while it lasts.

Or do what people have been doing for more than a decade: go to the State Botanical Gardens’ Sunflower Music Series.

“This is our eleventh summer,” said William Tonks, director of facilities.

Early this year, the Gardens even hosted Modern Skirts … which isn’t quite the rarity it seems.

“This was the third time they performed for us, and [it's] always a real popular band,” Tonks said. “In fact, they were the first band to play in the new Flower Garden when we moved the concert.”

Attracting horticulturists, students and families, the Flower Garden lawn is an exciting new entity for the Gardens.

“It’s a natural amphitheater,” he said. “It’s a terraced garden with three different levels and a kind of nice slope to the other part of it. And they built a stage, a dedicated permanent stage right at the bottom of it so the focal point of the garden kind of leads naturally right down to the stage. And it’s really cool looking.”

Grogus, a Latin and world music band headed by bassist Carl Lindberg, will be performing at the third concert of the series, where it is frequently a regular.

“Grogus has played our series probably for six or seven years and they’re the only act that we have come back every year,” Tonks said. “I try to rotate the acts for the other
