A Carlo Gavazzi Dupline Bus-Enabled Fully-Integrated Home in Gloucestershire (3/8/2011)
By Unique Buildings
In 2008, accountants Howard and Wendy Davis began a major refurbishment plan for their home, Fourways, located towards the southern edge of Painswick village, the ‘Queen of the Cotswolds’. This involved building a two-storey extension and garage, along with a major re-layout of the accommodation.

It proved the ideal opportunity to automate as much as possible of the house – to make the house smarter as well as bigger. Davis approached a number of installers directly, but none was able to offer a one-stop solution. After seeking advice from Dupline manufacturer Carlo Gavazzi, he selected one of the company’s preferred installation partners, Unique Buildings.
The brief
The Davis’ wanted a solution that would manage as many aspects of household operation as possible – more than simply the management of lights and heating. The automated home needed to look after security as well, and even extend to the existing multiroom audio system. Early on, the decision was made to base the solution on the Dupline two-wire bus system, which provides flexibility and high levels of safety and security. It features a completely free topology giving the freedom to configure the network as a line, ring, star or a combination of these. This makes planning easy and provides a high degree of flexibility for last-minute changes and future expansions
The model for the Davis’ plans was a project undertaken by Unique Buildings at Highclere, a GB8.75million home on the exclusive St George’s Hill estate in Surrey. That project incorporated the latest in building technologies and home automation, spanning heating, lighting, security and home entertainment.
The solution for Fourways was to manage as many aspects of household operation as possible, including lighting, heating, and security as well integrating with the existing Systemline multiroom audio system.
As with Highclere, the installation centres on an innovative smart-house system developed by Carlo Gavazzi. Its two-wire bus, called Dupline, communicates between components and also supplies them with power, so the installation process was significantly quicker. It was also lower in complexity, with cleaner lines.
Carlo Gavazzi products were used where available, such as intelligent light switches, movement detectors, light intensity sensors, dimmers, relays and thermostats. However, the bus and its controllers are also compatible with virtually all third-party control panels and input devices. At Fourways, it links with a Cytech security system including door access control. The security system can also send SMS or voice messages when an alarm is triggered.
The lighting system uses a third-party touchpanel interface, which also controls the heating (via Carlo Gavazzi relays and temperature sensors), as well as audio and video. Special drivers were used to enable the master generator to communicate with the Systemline audio touchscreen controller, whilst Dupline protocol is used to switch on lights according to inputs from PIR and motion sensors.
The Dupline system controls lighting, HVAC and audio/video in the kitchen/diner.
