At the time the pool was installed, the area was wrapped within a beautiful black wrought iron fence, which entered and exited into the surrounding landscape by two matching black wrought iron gates. Over the years, within the enclosure, in all soil areas, Louise constructed planting beds, filling the beds with cannas, crape myrtles, clematis, ferns, sunflowers, knockout roses, a cherry tree, Japanese maples, more elephant ears, lilies and a host of other flowering plants.
On the back side of the slope that supports the pool, Louise designed a veritable botanical garden where she situated a small aquatic garden and a bog, replete with elephant ears, cannas, lilies, lotus blossoms – any type of plant that thrives on abundant moisture.
Along the sidewalk entrance on the right, adjacent to the rear of the pool area, hydrangeas flaunt beautiful pastel blossom clusters.
In addition, Louise designed containers filled with impatiens, cactus and a mixture of other plants. A few years ago, to provide shelter from sun-rays and raindrops. Charles constructed a pavilion-style structure over one end of the pool area, furnished the spot with comfortable cushioned furniture, suspended
baskets of lovely flowers from the roofline and installed a TV. In the summertime, the two spent most of their evenings in the beauty of their surroundings, enjoying each other’s company.
Sadly, over the past few years, the pool remained mostly unused, but the expense and laborious upkeep continued each spring, summer and fall. Last year, they decided to eliminate the pool and transform the entire area into a completely functional courtyard.
