Gardeners | Gardeners Take Pride In Work

As summer moves along, gardeners appear eager to show off the fruits of their labour.
The fruits, vegetables, flowers and shrubs many dedicated gardeners cared for all season are on display at the annual Flower, Fruit and Vegetable Show at the Oliver Road Recreation Centre this weekend. Gardeners from the Thunder Bay Horticultural Society are showing off their accomplishments, from the smallest lettuce leaf, to planters filled with elaborate arrangements.
“It’s a good show this year, but entries are down for several reasons and the weather hasn’t been agreeing with the growing season,” said Erika North, president of the Thunder Bay Horticultural Society. “It’s mainly a showcase of what people can grow in their gardens.”
Entries were judged privately and awarded ribbons before the event was opened to the public. North said they had to expect fewer entries because weather was bad and they had to set a date regardless of how people’s gardens were progressing. Considering all the factors, she said they received many good entries.
The show has several categories for fruit, vegetable and flower arrangements. Individual fruit and vegetable entries are judged by characteristics like their colour and size. Houseplants and flowers are categorized by annual, perennial, collection and houseplant, to name a few.
