T he official arrival of autumn is only four weeks away. Research at Virginia Tech and other land grant universities proves that fall is the best time to fertilize a lawn. You’ll need two elements to get the job done – a spreader and fertilizer specifically intended for turf. Once you’ve applied the fertilizer to your lawn, water it thoroughly for best results. Remember to seed bare areas in the lawn. It’s a great time to fill in the dead spots or start a new lawn from scratch.
The peak of the vegetable growing season is behind us. You should, however, keep up pest control efforts in order to prevent a new generation of insects from inhabiting your garden in 2012. One of my favorite sprays for year-round use is insecticidal soap. To make it, just add two tablespoons of Ivory dishwashing detergent to a gallon of water. Mix the ingredients and then use a sprayer to apply the soap lightly to both the top and the bottom of plant leaves. Be especially careful to coat the underside of the leaves. This is where pests often lay their eggs.
