Vegetable Garden | Vegetable Garden Brings Disappointment
This has been a lack-luster summer for my yard, which I predicted last month . Sometimes, I hate it when I’m right.
The weather has been strange, with spurts of heavy rain between periods of dry weather and heavy winds. The result is a scraggly patch of vegetables that have all but given up on hope.
One tomato plant died a few weeks ago, its stalk yellowed and bare. The other tomato plant continues to produce, but it’s a half-hearted attempt.
My lettuce has gone to seed, and the carrots became mushy messes in the soil. The cilantro checked out a few weeks ago, which is just as well ” one can only use so many cilantro leaves on one’s burritos, anyway. It’s the same story with the basil leaves.
The Alpine strawberries, though, continue to take over a patch of the yard and reluctantly give fruit. I can usually pick a few berries if the rabbits or Gracie don’t get to them first.
My pepper plant gives sting amounts of peppers; I can usually coax about one or two off the plants per week. The chives are also thriving, but then again, it’s almost impossible to kill them. A lone eggplant grows defiantly in the middle of the yard, and I’m tempted to pick it early.
I do have one surprise in my yard ” I think a pumpkin is growing in it. That was completely unplanned, as I think the seeds were planted from the Halloween pumpkin last year that was later placed in the compost bin.
Once again, I’m disappointed with the harvest. I was hoping to grow
