Water Garden | The Water Gardener
Kayaking and gardening go together like a hand in glove, as they say. Kayaking is the best way to check out water gardens in their natural setting for one thing, especially the exotically coloured dragonflies that are to be found there.
This summer I again visited my favourite water garden on earth, the marsh at Otter Lake, in the Rideau Lakes region.
Only accessible by kayak, or by imagination, it’s something I do every year.
Filled to the brim with life, the marsh is always the busiest scene in spite of being incredibly serene on the surface.
This year there were some differences to note, and compare with next year.
For one thing, there weren’t as many white water lilies as I remember from other years, but there were way more blue water hyacinthes. I also never found the majestically yellow water lily that I usually find one or two of each summer. But there were turtles to compensate–and an enormous grey heron. And all sorts of dragonflies and damselflies in their very soignee apparels of jet black bodies with neon blue or orange trim along the side. The luminescence of their amazing wings seemed made of every colour all blended into one. But the best was saved at the edge of the marsh, beyond the reeds that poke up above
