Karachi, Feb 26 : The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has written to its Sri Lankan counterpart, requesting it to tour the country this year for a full series.

A senior official said that the PCB had already started a process to convince the Sri Lankan board to undertake the tour in October.

“We have written to them a few months back, highlighting the fact that it would be a big boost for Pakistan cricket if they agreed to play the series as scheduled in Pakistan,” the Daily Times quoted the senior PCB official, as saying.

Sources revealed that the PCB had also got indications from the government that it would provide foolproof security for any foreign team willing to tour Pakistan.

Earlier, Sri Lankan board chief Somachandra de Silva had said that he was in touch with the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Special Task Force for Pakistan on the matter, adding that any decision would be based on the advice received from the ICC Task Force and their own authorities on the security situation in Pakistan.

PCB chief Ijaz Butt welcomed de Silva’s statement and expressed the hope that the series would be played in Pakistan.

“The comments of Mr Silva are reassuring and will help a long way in helping restore the confidence of the international cricket community in playing cricket in Pakistan,” Butt said in a statement.

“Sri Lanka is a brotherly nation and they have always stood by our side whenever we have needed their support. Whatever happened two years ago was extremely tragic and every cricket-loving Pakistani was feeling sad for the Sri Lankan team,” he said.

“Pakistani fans are missing the big events of cricket at home and they are waiting for the international teams to visit Pakistan. We are in constant touch with ICC, The Task Team on Pakistan and the other Boards in this regard and are hopeful of international cricket return to Pakistan very soon”, he added.

No foreign team has visited Pakistan since March 2009, when militants attacked the Sri Lankan team in Lahore killing six policemen and a van driver and wounding several players of the travelling side.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has handed England all-rounder Tim Bresnan a reprimand after he breached its Code of Conduct during England’s Cricket World Cup match against India in Bangalore.

With the game heading towards its eventual outcome of a tie – both sides taking a point apiece from a gripping encounter – Bresnan hit the stumps with his bat after he was bowled by Piyush Chawla in the 48th over of England’s innings.

He subsequently pleaded guilty to the Level One offence, having breached the part of the code relating to “abuse of cricket equipment of clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings”.

Match referee Roshan Mahanama brought the charge against Bresnan, and he explained:

“While giving my verdict, I took into account that Bresnan admitted his mistake, apologised for his action and that it was his first offence.

“Further, it was encouraging to note that Bresnan on his own initiative met the umpires concerned and reiterated that his action was unintentional.

“However, there is no room for this type of action in our great sport and cricketers are always expected to play the game in the true spirit of cricket. These cricketers are role models of millions of aspiring cricketers.”

Level One offences carry penalties ranging from a reprimand to a fine of up to 50 percent of a player’s match fee.

He becomes the second player in the tournament to be reprimanded by the ICC for such an offence following Australian captain Ricky Ponting, who inadvertently damaged a television following his dismissal against Zimbabwe.

Furthermore, England were fined for maintaining a slow over-rate after they were found to be one over short of their target during India’s innings of 338 all out.

As such, the players were fined ten percent of their match fee and captain Andrew Strauss had his fine doubled to 20 percent.

Steven Davies, an England cricket young star, made a surprising announcement when he was interviewed by The Daily Telegraph on February 27. Davies becomes the first active professional cricketer to stand up and announce he’s a gay.

Steven Davies, 24, said he decided to come out from his hiding place after months of personal conflict. He said the admission was made in order to make it “more acceptable” within the game.

Davies said: “I’m comfortable with who I am – and happy to say who I am in public.

“This is the right time for me.

“I feel it is right to be out in the open about my sexuality. If more people do it, the more acceptable it will become. That must be a good thing.

“To speak out is a massive relief for me, but if I can just help one person to deal with their sexuality then that’s all I care about.”

Davies, who was the captain of England U-19 cricket team, is regarded as a talented player who will be England’s future star. He made his international debut in 2009 during the Twenty20 in Trinidad.

The sporting community, and also other communities, warmly welcomed Davies’ brave announcement.

Vikram Solanki, chairman of the Professional Cricketers’ Association, said Davies has “the full support of all his colleagues in cricket.” In the national team, coach Andy Flower and captain Andrew Strauss said they have backed him 100%.

Stephen Fry, a gay actor and writer, also praised Davies. He described the cricketer as “brave, charming, modest and inspiring – a top man”.

Davies’s top decision to speak up his sexuality at such an early stage in his professional life, is considered as massively significant in destroying taboos surrounding homosexuality in professional sport.

“I hope it’s all going to be fine with the fans,” Davies added.

“If there is any abuse or anything then I don’t need to worry about those people giving it out.

“The people that matter to me are family, friends and my team-mates, and everyone has been so amazing, that’s what counts.”

By Shahid Hashmi(AFP)- Feb 5, 2011

KARACHI — Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram admitted that the lengthy bans handed out to Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer for corruption on Saturday represented a new low for the besieged sport in the country.

“I feel sad for all three of these kids, two just over 20 and one just 18,” Wasim told AFP.

“I feel for their families because they are key players. This is a low for Pakistan cricket.”

The International Cricket Council’s anti-corruption tribunal on Saturday banned Butt for 10 years (five suspended), Asif for seven years (two suspended) and teenager Aamer for five.

The bans were handed after an investigation into allegations made by the News of the World that the players deliberately bowled no-balls in the Lord’s Test against England in August.

Wasim said he hopes the punishments will serve as a lesson.

“Not only for cricketers in Pakistan, but also for the players of the world, this should be a lesson, and I sincerely hope that the ICC has set an example with this verdict and this will serve as a clean-up, not only in Pakistan cricket, but in world cricket,” said Wasim.

Wasim said Aamer is a special talent.

“I was very happy to see Aamer?s progress, but with this punishment his career will suffer. I hope he comes back strongly,” said Wasim, of the teenage left-arm paceman who has been compared to him.

Former Pakistan spinner Iqbal Qasim termed the decision as “upsetting”.

“All three players were the future of Pakistan cricket, so it’s a very upsetting day,” said former spinner Iqbal, who is also the head of the National Bank team for which all three players featured in domestic matches.

“All three had promising careers but it’s sad that they fell into a trap and couldn?t recover. They could have earned more through playing international cricket,” said Qasim, also a former chief selector.

Qasim said the decision must serve as reminder for other cricketers as well as for Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

“I hope these punishments will help future cricketers be more responsible. I think it should also serve as a jolt for the PCB who should have curbed this before it happened,” said Qasim.

Former captain Rashid Latif said the loss of the three players will be temporary.

“To gain an honest system, and have unquestionable integrity, you have to lose something and players come and go – this will be a momentary loss for Pakistan cricket,” said Latif, who blew the match-fixing whistle against fellow players in 1994.

Former paceman Sarfraz Nawaz termed the decision as “pre-judged”.

“The ICC had decided to give punishments to the players because there was too much pressure on them to curb fixing,” Nawaz told AFP. “It?s an important day for world cricket and very sad for Pakistan.”

Nawaz said Aamer and Asif will be sorely missed in next month?s World Cup.

“Aamer and Asif are a huge loss,” said Nawaz, of the new-ball pairing.

“They are the world’s best opening bowlers and will be missed, while Butt has matured into a solid opener.”

Fans in the street had a mixed reaction, some calling the decision a “conspiracy” against the Pakistan team.

“The ICC is biased,” said student Mohib Alint. “They banned three key players so that Pakistan could not win the World Cup.”

But other fans blamed the players.

“All three have spoiled Pakistan?s cricket image. We cannot play cricket at home because teams do not travel to Pakistan because of security fears and now because of spot-fixing, teams will refuse to play us anywhere,” said banker Shabbir Hussian.

VIEW: Of religion and national pride -Yasser Latif Hamdani

The world does not trust us anymore to hold international sporting events because our ‘free’ media and ‘independent’ judiciary have inadvertently laid bare the ugliness has that runs deep in our souls as a nation

As the cricket World Cup continues in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, one cannot but lament having missed the opportunity to watch a third World Cup in Pakistan. Those like me who watched the 1987 semi-final and 1996 final in Lahore and later an extraordinary India-Pakistan series in 2004 now watch with a heavy heart as India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh display their beautiful cultures and countries while all the world knows about Pakistan is that it is an extremist haven where differences of opinion are settled through bullets, usually 27 or so, aimed at silencing all differing points of view.

Just as well though. After all, our main cricket stadium – which is home to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) headquarters – is not named after our founding fathers or national leaders (unlike in India and Bangladesh). Nor is it named after cricket stars like Imran Khan or Fazal Mahmood. No sir, thanks to Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and the much-touted ‘Islamic Summit Conference’, our main cricket stadium is named after Colonel Gaddafi, who, whatever his contributions to his country might have been ages ago, is today a tyrant and who has unleashed hell on his own people. Imagine our embarrassment if a World Cup game was to be played at Gaddafi Stadium, while Gaddafi ordered use of mercenary forces to crush the people of Benghazi.

The truth is that while Pakistan is as much culturally diverse and colourful as any of the other countries of the subcontinent, we would have never gotten the opportunity to display such diversity. The picture more likely to be transmitted as Pakistan’s culture would be that of Sunni Tehreek calling for death to Shias and non-Muslims. Already, the conservative government of Punjab, backed by a retrogressive right-wing judiciary, has cracked down on Basant and discontinued the Lahore Marathon – events that were poised to become a permanent feature on international calendars. The excuse for banning Basant is that it causes deaths since the government is incapable of ensuring that the dangerous use of metal wire is curbed. Fair enough, but I propose here and now to the geniuses in the Punjab government and our judiciary to kindly also ban inter alia cars, planes and high-rises. Cars ought to be banned because some drivers overspeed and that causes fatal accidents. Planes ought to be banned because, well, you never know when someone might fall off from behind the landing gear. High-rises ought to be banned because contractors often use substandard building materials and designs and these might collapse in the event of an earthquake. Brilliant logic Messrs Sharifs and company! And then people wonder why the world does not think much of us? There is, of course, never a dull moment in Pakistan, but I am not sure if people visiting Pakistan can always appreciate our indigenous forms of extreme entertainment.

Our very free media has perfected the art of national masochism. Case in point: a certain female TV anchor whose favourite pastime is reading out inciting fatwas on air. Having been fired from one channel for the high-pitched hogwash that she is known for, she now hosts the ‘flagship’ show for another channel. This was to be expected as her new employer is trying to bolster its reputation with the conspiracy theorists by promoting as a political analyst another conspiracy monger who thinks himself an Islamic Che Guevara gearing up for Ghazwa-e-Hind (war against India). Delusions of grandeur and a high pitched squeaky voice is all one needs to be taken seriously in our free media. Anyway, in a recent show, the aforesaid anchor insisted that singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was mistreated and even incarcerated by the Indians after he was found to be carrying foreign exchange in excess of what the Indian laws allow. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan – the alleged victim of Indian nationalist bigotry – corrected her at least four times on the issue by saying that the Indians never arrested him nor did they mistreat him. Coming on the heels of the Veena Malik episode, the way our media has stoked this fire is indicative of a malaise that runs deep.

The short version is that the world does not trust us anymore to hold international sporting events because our ‘free’ media and ‘independent’ judiciary have inadvertently laid bare the ugliness has that runs deep in our souls as a nation. We are increasingly presented as a nation of extremists who are easily riled up in the name of false religious frenzy and national pride. What is more is that we have become victims of our own sick and perverted voyeurism that fuels our media and eggs on our judiciary.

Therefore, for many decades to come, the only tourists Pakistan is likely to receive are either those extremists looking for terrorist training in our Wild, Wild West or CIA contractors in hot pursuit. It is a shame because as a country we have a lot of positives to offer to the world. Instead, we are proud to live in the la-la land where the number of nukes not universities or schools determines our self worth. That too is to be expected because we declared to the world long ago that we would eat grass and make nuclear weapons. Of course it is always the poor and hapless masses that eat grass, never the ruling elite that proclaims such brave lies. In our country, the opium of religion and national pride is never in short supply.

Cricket fans in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, on Saturday created a 45-feet tall bat to cheer Team India, ahead of their World Cup match against England.

About 500 students and some craftsmen took 15 days to make the bat.

Sugandha Sharma, a student said: “We want to send our best wishes to Team India through this bat. I want the whole of India to cheer the team so that they will win this World Cup”

India will play England on Sunday.

“We have expressed our thoughts and emotions through this bat. Everyone is doing something or the other to cheer the team. This is a gift from our side to them,” said Shobhit Chatterjee, another student.
