The federal government is expected to announce an end to the live updating of betting odds during the broadcast of sporting events.

Federal Sports Minister Mark Arbib will hold a teleconference with the NRL, AFL, ARU, Football Federation Australia, Cricket Australia and Netball Australia on Friday, The Daily Telegraph says.

Collingwood football club president and media personality Eddie McGuire told his radio program on Triple M radio in Melbourne on Friday that Senator Arbib would announce the ban after the meetings.

“My understanding is … they will announce, or a push towards, a ban on odds mentioned during radio and TV broadcasts of sporting with the exception of pay and free to air racing,” McGuire said.

The AFL has faced questions about recent plunges on exotic bets, leading to concerns that playing lists might have been deliberately leaked, while the NRL is also facing a similar issue with several people charged.

AFL chief Andrew Demetriou, speaking on the Neil Mitchell program on 3AW this morning, did not mention the teleconference, repeating his wish for federal government action on gambling.

“This is an issue that we have taken up with the federal government, we’ve taken up with the betting agencies and the venues.

“It is absolutely an issue that this sort of advertising in your face has the potential to get in the heads of young children. And we’ve been very proactive … about having some protocol around this advertising and try and do it a bit more sensitively … and sensibly.”

Demetriou said the AFL had no control over advertising on scoreboards at venues where its games were played, and the league gained no revenue from such odds announcements.

He said there was definitely a concern that AFL players could be tempted to pervert the outcome of a match for financial gain.

“The potential is absolutely there, absolutely. That’s why Adrian Anderson has increased our resources and the number of people working in this area to protect the integrity of the game.

“I would caution anybody out there who is considering it – we have wide-ranging powers and methods to uncover these sorts of activities, and they will not be tolerated.

“Under our rules, it would lead to more than sacking, it weould lead to severe penalties and sanctions. We’re calling on the federal government to adopt the rules of any corruption – it has a jail sentence …”

Concerns were raised recently about abnormal betting on which player would kick the first goal, in AFL matches where defenders unexpectedly lined up in the forward line.

Rugby league player manager Sam Ayoub, former player John Elias and former Bulldogs forward Ryan Tandy have been charged over alleged illegal betting activity surrounding a round 24 NRL match between the Bulldogs and the Cowboys on August 21, 2010.

A high profile campaign for responsible gambling ends today, with the issue having gained widespread publicity since an ABC Four Corners investigation aired on Monday night.

According to Sports Illustrated of India, cricket odds have been affected by bookmakers, and they have the names to prove it, although they refused to publish the names, saying they would hand all evidence over to the International Cricket Council and the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

Apparently a senior BCCI official told their reporter that it was noticed that several people that may have affected the cricket odds were hanging around the players in the second edition of the IPL in South Africa, as well as throughout the Champions League.

“Several known shady characters based in the Middle East, but not seen in India, flew into South Africa and booked rooms in the players’ hotel,” the official was quoted as saying by the magazine.

“We also get any number of tip-offs and see which ones seem more serious. There’s so much access [to players] that it’s difficult to control everything,” an ICC official added.

Previously the Pakistan Cricket Board had similar problems with cricket betting bookmakers who convinced players to throw no balls to affect cricket odds when instructed, by offering them money.

In the article, an anonymous Indian politician told of how he and his friends made large profits cricket betting on the World Cup semi-final between India and Pakistan.

He claims that four Pakistan players were paid to lower the cricket odds by performing or the poor side and that two Indian players were involved in other fixes.

The BCCI said they will not act unless there is “concrete evidence” at hand. “So far we have not received anything from them [Sports Illustrated]. They are saying they will give us the tapes, but so far they haven’t,” BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla told Mail Today.

“Unless there is concrete evidence, we can’t take action in this issue.”

Many argue that low salaries are the reason that bookmakers can bribe the players to change the cricket odds, since the teams generally have a salary cap in the IPL, in the hopes that it is more of a balanced chance for all involved.

HARARE — Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe is set to be the location of the country’s third Test cricket ground. If local authority approval is obtained, which Zimbabwe Cricket expects, it will be within sight of the mile long Falls with its 100 metres deep chasm straddling the Zambezi River.

Some 4,000 players and spectators would feel the spray. Matches will also be played under floodlights at the venue, which could take three years to complete.

Construction work is expected to begin early next year. At present the area is raw African bush.

Zimbabwe has two Test grounds. The main one is at Harare Sports Club in the capital. The other is in the second city Bulawayo — Queens Sports Club — which was established more than 100 years ago.

The move to build another ground right up against one of the great tourist destinations of the world follows close upon the International Cricket Council (ICC) approval last April for a return by Zimbabwe to Test cricket after a six years absence from the top level.

The Zimbabweans have been scheduled to host Bangladesh in August for one Test and a series of five ODI’s, followed almost immediately by Pakistan, whose playing programme is not yet arranged. Then they will travel to New Zealand for a Christmas period series.

Victoria Falls, considered one of the natural wonders of the world, is a growing tourist destination, not least by cricket mad South Africans and visitors from England.

Alistair Campbell, a former Zimbabwe Test captain, now a senior official with Zimbabwe Cricket, said the ground arena and clubhouse grandstand could be completed in three years.

He said: “Zimbabwe is progressing now in every way and tourism is on the up. Victoria Falls could be an alternative venue to Dubai. There is also easy accessibility from Zambia across the river. We recently had 9000 people at a 20-20 tournament in Harare and we never saw anywhere near that when I was playing Tests, so it is an indication of cricket progress here.”

Zimbabwe Cricket chief executive Ossias Bvute said: “Following the soccer World Cup in South Africa the eyes of the world are on Africa as a sports destination. Victoria Falls is a wonderful location. It has a year round sunny climate and the potential for big crowds.

Zimbabwe was forced to withdraw from Test cricket in 1995 when captain Heath Streak was sacked for complaining about selection policy and the entire professional squad went on strike in his support.

A second team was put up against New Zealand, Sri Lanka and India, resulting in huge defeats, forcing chairman Peter Chingoka to withdraw from Test cricket, though Zimbabwe’s status as full ICC member was retained.

A return to Tests was agreed after a meeting with the ICC in Harare last April that followed a triangular tournament between India, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe.

Architects in Harare are working on design details and these will go to the Victoria Falls council in a few weeks.
