For nearly 80 years, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has been the epicenter of the Southwest, boasting more than 22,000 volunteers who contribute their unique talents and time to be part of the world’s largest livestock display which is also the world’s most spectacular rodeo and entertainment event.
Since the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo began, it has made a huge impact on the livestock and entertainment industries as well as within the popular sport of rodeo. The rodeo has also played a significant role in enriching the lives of many thousands of younger people in Texas.
The rodeo has also celebrated many milestones in the past few decades which have all contributed towards Houston’s most popular event.
In January 1931, the Houston Fat Stock Show and Livestock Exposition was established and in the following year, in April, the very first show was held at the Democratic Convention Hall.
The rodeo and BBQ contest have taken the livestock and rodeo show to heady heights as it has grown in popularity, drawing more and more visitors year after year to sample the atmosphere, taste and sound of Texas.
In 1974, the first World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest was held, following which it became a great tradition attracting growing numbers of people over the years, and 2009 saw nearly 1.9 million visitors at the show which broke the attendance record that was set in 2004.
In 2010, the rodeo’s 79th year, the Houston Rodeo and Livestock BBQ Contest stands as being the largest BBQ competition in the World and forms a distinct part of the Livestock and Rodeo event.
BBQ Pitmasters travel from all reaches of the nation, including those of great notoriety including reknowned teams such Ronnie Wade (Hill County), Tim Butler (Hot Knots Cooking Team), and Carolyn Baird of Colorado County.
The BBQ event has something for everyone, including less formal categories such as the “Go Texan Most Colorful Team” and “Most Recycled”, an award which is give to the team that recycles the most waste on the day.
The food categories include Chicken, Ribs, Brisket, Best Bar-B-Que, as well as overall Grand Champion.
Outside of the BBQ contest and the Livestock and Rodeo event, there is plenty of entertainment available to keep visitors engaged, most of which is held within the area known as “The Garden”.
The Garden is located in the center of the World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest, and offers live music with plenty of room for dancing and in 2010, the live entertainment will run for all three days of the contest making it a family event that everyone can participate in.
2010 is set to be the greatest Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo event yet, and is scheduled for March 2nd – 4th, with the World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest running just prior to that; from February 25th – 27th.
