Carl McArthur Tuckett is one of the few cricketers from the tiny Caribbean island of Nevis (part of St. Kitts and Nevis) to represent the West Indies. Although he played one match, an ODI against England in 1998, Tuckett was a consistent performer for the Leeward Islands in First Class cricket.

Born in Nevis on May 18, 1970, Carl Tuckett made his First Class debut for the Leeward Islands in the West Indies’ 1994/1995 domestic season. He was something of an allrounder, bowling right-arm medium pace and batting right-handed at position seven or eight for most of his career. The highlight of Tuckett’s career was when he was selected for the Caribbean side for an ODI series against England in the Caribbean.

In his debut game, at the Queens Park Oval in Port of Spain, the Nevisian bowler opened the bowling for the West Indies and took two wickets for 41 runs off eight overs. That performance helped the regional team to a comfortable 57-run victory over England. Given that it was the fifth ODI of a five-match series, Tuckett was selected as an afterthought almost. The West Indies had already won the series, but the Nevisian’s selection came on the back of a consistent domestic season.

At First Class level, Carl Tuckett only played for the Leeward Islands-the group of islands on the northern side of the Eastern Caribbean. Although starting off as a bowler, his batting progressed during his career-such that he often contributed useful runs to the Leeward’s effort. From 41 First Class Games and 64 innings, the lower order batsman scored 1591 runs at an average of 30.01. Of those 1591 runs, there were nine half-centuries and one century (his career-best 142).

With the ball, Tuckett’s figures were decent without being spectacular. While he only scalped 73 wickets, his average of 19.97 and strike rate of 50.0 demonstrated an ability to keep things under control when opening the bowling. Carl took only one five-wicket haul-a career-best 6/25 runs.

The Nevisian cricketer also played 30 one-day games for the Leeward Islands and West Indies combined. From 18 innings, he scored 306 runs at an average of 25.50. His highest score in that format was an unbeaten 71, which was his only half century as well. With the ball, Carl took only 13 wickets, but his parsimonious economy rate of 3.90 that truly revealed his value in the shorter form of the game. Tuckett stopped playing competitive cricket in 2004, just before the Twenty20 format was introduced in the Caribbean. He would likely have been well suited to that format.
