Students from six schools in and around the Indian capital city of Delhi have been breaking new ground for the BBC’s School Report project.

The pupils, aged between 11 and 15, may be 4,000 miles from the UK hub of the big newsgathering day.

But they have been busy conducting interviews and filing reports on three different areas:

Commonwealth Games – The big sporting extravaganza which was staged by India in October 2010

Cricket World Cup – Pupils have been following the fortunes of India as they faced Australia on Thursday in the quarter-finals

Local issues – Subjects have ranged from the environment to exam stress

The schools taking part in the project, which is supported by the British Council, are: Heritage School Gurgaon, JNV Karnal, Sanskriti School Chanakyapuri, APL Schoool Pitampura, Chiranjiv Bharti Palam Vihar and Chiranjiv Bharti Gurgaon.

Pupils have been recording pieces and uploading them to a dedicated website.

Vaishali, 15, said: “It is a great thing to be part of such an innovative project.”

Fellow student Ardash added: “Students have been preparing lots of interviews.”

Teacher Anju said partnerships were already in place with schools in the UK.

“The children who were picked have innate reporting skills and are extremely excited to be part of this project. They are better than some of us at writing,” she joked.

An avid cricket enthusiast’s take on the 2010 Cricket World Cup
Ranjeet Varma Delhi

At last we enter the business end of the World Cup 2011. The past few days have once again proved that cricket is a religion in this part of the world and despite the done to death debate on the future of the 50 over game, the games and crowds so far prove it will survive as of now.

Some of the highlights / controversies / questions so far have been –

Associates vs Top Eight – The inclusion of the so called associate nations – barring Ireland and Bangladesh (despite so much exposure they still play like an associate nation and elude the main bracket).

Selectors vs Experts – The much debated balance and form of the Indian team with every Tom, Dick and Harry donning the role of an expert and giving their views.

Captain’s boy vs Crowd’s favourite – Staying with our home team, the Piyush Chawla / R Ashwin debate generated the most controversy with our captain clinging to the erratic Chawla as Tarzan clings to Jane and giving stupid statements to the press on this about Ashwin being “mentally strong”.

Indian hospitality vs Australian hostility – Two stalwarts who are playing their last world cup – Tendulkar and Ponting again showed traits of Indian hospitality and benevolence versus Australian aggressiveness and hostility. Tendulkar walked back to the pavilion in the match against the Windies even when the umpire was nodding vociferously that he was not out! In contrast Ponting in his match against Pakistan stood his ground even when the ground umpire ruled him out. This was ultimately given out by the third umpire. Ponting himself said later that he knew he was out. In his match against Zimbabwe, Ponting glorified Oz aggressiveness when he vented his ire on a poor TV set.

Third Umpire / Ground Umpire – The Decision Review system also generated and still does generate a lot of debate.

Batting Powerplay – Even experts forget the players, commentators and followers have no answer to when is the right time to take a batting Powerplay?

Controversies galore –
Kolkata and Eden Gardens losing their first match due to so called “unpreparedness”.

The Star News expose on umpires turning match fixers right in the middle of this World Cup!Some matches especially featuring England and Australia coming under the ICC scanner owing to their surprising results.

Umpire Asoka DeSilva being not allowed to officiate in the knockout stage owing to controversial decisions.

The authorities claiming that the Windies were stoned by mere “pebbles” by angry Bangla fans leading to an angry reaction by Chris Gayle who after that incidentally was seen more off the field than on it – interestingly he plays his most important match in the quarter finals against Pakistan in Bangladesh!

The Quarter Final Line up — Some Surprises

Pakistan vs Windies – Unpredictable Pakis surprised everyone by topping their group and meeting a team of similar nature. In this clash of the unpredictable warriors, I put my money on Pakistan.

India vs Australia – The Big Game – This was supposed to be a FINALE clash but this is the “mini-finale”. Punters have put their money on India that enjoys the home advantage. Both teams are not exactly in the best of form but would be a cliffhanger as Aussies are a very formidable opponent. I look forward to David Hussey’s return as he knows Indian conditions. Hope Sachin to score his 100th ton and Ponting to redeem his position with a good knock. No predictions though for this humdinger – Fingers Crossed!

South Africa vs New Zealand – SA looked the best team in the tournament despite the Graeme Smith’s poor form. SA is my favourite but you can’t underestimate the combined talent pool of the New Zealand team. Look forward to a tight match unless the Kiwis live up to their unpredictable reputation. Watch out for Robin Petersen vs Ross Taylor, Tim Southee vs AB De Villiers.

Sri Lanka vs England – My money on Sri Lanka but England who made it by the skin of their teeth and some controversial results under ICC scanner can spring a surprise or two. Look out for the wily Collingwood if he plays.

That’s all for now – Hope you enjoy the Quarters and see India through to the next round…

IN THE 27th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, group ‘B’ teams England and co-hosts of the tournament Bangladesh will meet on Friday, March 12 at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong under flood lights. England is one victory away from the quarterfinals of the tournament.

The English team will miss the services of their batsman Kevin Pietersen and fast bowler Stuart Broad throughout the tournament. Left-handed batsman Eoin Morgan has joined the team as the replacement for Kevin Pietersen, who has been ruled out because of hernia pain. Stuart Broad was ruled out from the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 due to a side strain.

The English team started its Cricket World Cup 2011 campaign with a six-wicket victory against Netherlands. In the next match against India, they tied from a match winning situation. In the third match against Ireland Andrew Strauss and his team failed to defend 327 runs. In their fourth match against South Africa, the English team defended a meagre total of 171 runs and won by six runs.

Bangladesh, who has played three matches so far in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, won one against Ireland and lost two matches against India and West Indies. In the last match against West Indies at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur on March 4, the Bangladeshis were all out for 58 runs in just 18.5 overs.
At this stage it is very difficult for Bangladesh to secure a berth in the quarter finals.

England and Bangladesh had played 14 matches with each other in the past, in which the English team has won 13 times, including one World Cup encounter and six sub-continent matches. The English team has lost only once to Bangladesh in July 2010 in Bristol by five runs.

England captain Andrew Strauss is the highest run getter in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 so far. He has scored 280 runs in four innings including a 158-runs inning against India, whereas Jonathan Trott has scored 222 runs.

Here are the squads of England and Bangladesh for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011:

England: Andrew Strauss (capt), James Anderson, Ian Bell, Ravi Bopara, Tim Bresnan, Paul Collingwood, Eoin Morgan, Matt Prior (wk), Ajmal Shahzad, Graeme Swann, James Tredwell, Jonathan Trott, Luke Wright, Michael Yardy, Chris Tremlett (likely to replace injured Staurt Broad).

Bangladesh: Shakib Al Hasan (capt), Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes, Zunaed Siddique, Shahriar Nafees, Roqibul Hassan, Mohammad Ashraful, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Naeem Islam, Mahmudullah, Abdur Razzak, Rubel Hossain, Shafiul Islam, Nazmul Hossain, Md Sohrawordi.
