The Winter Olympic Games is a sporting event that takes place in a different city every four years. It includes many of the best athletes from all over the world. The first modern Games were held in Athens in 1896. The Summer Olympic Games has many sports, including athletics (track and field events such as sprint, marathon, and discus), swimming, gymnastics, cycling, boxing, soccer, weightlifting, wrestling, brasketball, and many other sports. The torch is brought in after being carried around the world, from Olympia, where the original olympics were held. Doves are released. Then, every athlete from each country comes into the stadium in alphabetical order, except for Greece, which comes first in as they created the games, and the country where the games are held, which goes last. The Olympic Rings became the symbol of the Olympic Games in 1913. The five rings represent the fact that countries from all five continents of the world take part in the games. Each ring is a different color, and at least one of the five colors (Blue, Yellow, Black, Green, and Red) can be found on the flag of every country in the world. The rings do not represent particular continents. 2010 olympics results

=============

The 2010 Winter Olympics, officially the XXI Olympic Winter Games or the 21st Winter Olympics, is a major international multi-sport event held on February 12″28, 2010, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, with some events held in the resort town of Whistler, British Columbia and in the Vancouver suburbs of Richmond, West Vancouver and the University Endowment Lands. Both the Olympic and Paralympic Games are being organized by the Vancouver Organizing Committee (VANOC). The 2010 Winter Olympics will be the third Olympics hosted by Canada, and the first by the province of British Columbia. Previously, Canada was home to the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec and the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta. Following Olympic tradition, then Vancouver mayor Sam Sullivan received the Olympic flag during the closing ceremony of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. The flag was raised on February 28, 2006, in a special ceremony, and was on display at Vancouver City Hall until the Olympic opening ceremony. The event was officially opened by Governor General Michalle Jean.[3]

The Canadian Olympic Association chose Vancouver as the Canadian candidate city over Calgary, which sought to re-host the games and Quebec City, which had lost the 2002 Olympic bid in 1995. On the first round of voting on November 21, 1998, Vancouver-Whistler had 26 votes, Quebec City with 25 and Calgary 21. On December 3, 1998, the second and final round of voting occurred between the two leading contenders, which saw Vancouver win with 40 votes compared to Quebec City’s 32. The win allowed Vancouver to prepare its bid and begin lobbying efforts internationally.[citation needed] After the bid bribing scandal that took place with the 2002 Winter Olympics at Salt Lake City (which saw Quebec City asking for compensation (C$8 million) for their failed 2002 bid),[4] 1999 saw many of the rules around the bidding process change. The IOC created the Evaluation Commission which was appointed on October 24, 2002. Prior to the bidding for the 2008 Summer Olympics, often host cities would fly members of the IOC to their city where they toured the city and were provided with gifts from the city. The lack of oversight and transparency often led to allegations of money for votes.

Afterward, changes brought forth by the IOC bidding rules were tightened, and more focused on technical aspects of candidate cities. The team analysed the candidate city features and provided its input back to the IOC. The bid books from the three candidate cities were submitted in January 2003 and inspections occurred before May 2003, when the final report was submitted.[citation needed] Vancouver won the bidding process to host the Olympics by a vote of the International Olympic Committee on July 2, 2003, at the 115th IOC Session held in Prague, Czech Republic. The result was announced by IOC President Jacques Rogge.[5] Vancouver faced two other finalists shortlisted that same February: PyeongChang, South Korea, and Salzburg, Austria. Pyeongchang had the most votes of the three cities in the first round of voting, in which Salzburg was eliminated. In the run-off, all but two of the members who had voted for Salzburg voted for Vancouver. It was the closest vote by the IOC since Sydney, Australia beat Beijing for the 2000 Summer Olympics by 2 votes. Vancouver’s victory came almost 2 years after Toronto’s 2008 Summer Olympic bid was defeated by Beijing in a landslide vote. The British Columbia government also indicated it would pay for a $600 million upgrade of the Sea-to-Sky Highway to accommodate increased traffic between Vancouver and Whistler. The Vancouver Olympic Committee (VANOC) spent $16.6 million on upgrading facilities at Cypress Mountain, which will host the freestyle (aerials, moguls, ski cross) and snowboarding events. The athletes’ villages in Whistler and Vancouver are now complete, as are the main media centre in Coal Harbour and its Whistler counterpart.[6] With the opening in February 2009 of the $40-million Vancouver Olympic/Paralympic Centre at Hillcrest Park which will host curling, every sports venue for the 2010 games was completed on time and at least one year prior to the games.[7][8]

2010 Sport Event | World Cup 2010 South Africa Faces Mexico In World Cup 2010 Opener

Saturday, October 2nd, 2010

Everything is good to go for World Cup South Africa 2010 to kickoff in just a couple more days. This is the planet’s most important and prestigious soccer tournament and perhaps one of the finest sporting events.

The tournament is schedule to begin on June 11th. The National teams from Mexico and South Africa will be the protagonists of the first opening game that inaugurates the competition.

This is the third time that South Africa participates in a World Cup event. Their first came back in France 98, then on Korea-Japan 2002. In both tournaments the team was not able to make it pass the first round of games.

South Africa has one big responsibility. They really need to bring on their A game to the tournament. They really don’t want to be the first host country not to make it pass the groups round robin phase of the tournament.

There is a lot of preassure upon the hosting team. That’s why the Bafana Bafana have trained as hard as they can. They have overcome many obstacles in their route to this opening game. This is the first time that the World Cup is going to be held in the African continent, so that doubles the expectations.

Carlos Alberto Parrerira, the recurring national team head coach for South Africa had been part of the team in 2007 and 2008. He returned half into 2009 to guide the team and prepare them for the challenging tournament. There is a program that hopes to bring South African players to improve in their professional game. The sports press has qualified the team as been highly irregular and unreliable. This is the best chance they have to take that stigma off their back.

The Bafana Bafana knows very well that Mexico is quite a difficult team to face in the first game. The Mexican has a lot of potential and could really give the host team a hard time on their first game. Parreira, on the other hand, stays calm. He is well aware of the talent he’s got among him men. Even more, playing at home should give the South African team an edge.

The South African national team is trying to prove the soccer world that they are a capable team. The men are not going to give in that easily. They have not lost a single game in the friendly matches they have played prior to the World Cup.

Aaron Mokoena, the team’s captain, believes that they do have an advantage by playing at home and having talented players in the pitch, as well as the fact that they are guided by an experienced coach. They have the talent and the motivation to give the Mexicans a big surprise in game 1.

The Mexican National team, the other great star in the first game, has played in thirteen World Cups. They have a good record of at least making it to the second round.

Mexico has been characterized as a strong team. En route to South Africa 2010, the team managed to defeat Italy, the defending champion, 2-1 in a friendly game just a couple days ago.

The Mexicans have in their team some very talented players that know very well how to pass the ball and be a thread in the midfield. Their strikers are fast and quite lethal in the offensive end.

Mexican Head Coach, Javier Aguirre, has studied many tapes and has come with a plan to deploy his most talented players against the South African defense. He has made a few last minute changes in his startup. He hopes these little variants might pay off at the end.

In their last game South Africa won 1-0 against Denmark. The South Africans seemed like a fresher team, with good control over the ball and that knows how to change from offensive to defensive play smoothly.

Both teams are going through a good moment. This will be a good ingredient for the opening game in South Africa 2010 World Cup.
