I am writing before the final Test at Sydney. The Ashes has already been decided and England has achieved what was impossible to think of a decade ago.

Ashes is the oldest cricket rivalry between England and Australia. The series has always caught the attention of the people and media. It is the oldest rivalry in the Cricketing world.

Ashes 2010 started with England as the favorites but it was never said that Australia was ruled out. Beating Australia at home requires more than just tag of favorite. The series started and the first match result forced many to rethink. The result was a draw but the way both team fought it was hard to pick the favorite. The match ended in a positive note for England and this positivity was reflected in the second Test with England wining but Australia fought back and won the third Test.

All was set for Boxing Day Test and momentum was with Australia. The match delayed due to rain but when it started it produced one of the blackest day for the Australian cricket. First they were bowled out for just 98 and they failed to get any wicket on the first day.

Channel Nine commentators were trying to reduce the intensity of damage by stating again and again that when England would come to bat it would be as difficult for them and Australia would fight back after bundling out at 98 but they were proved wronged and awfully wrong. The inability of the Kangaroos to dislodge the Lions was humiliating and this humiliation reached its pinnacle when Australia lost the match by the margin of an innings and English players danced on the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The result of England as a victorious side was expected before the series started but it was not thought by anyone that Australia would surrender in such a poor fashion. The result is the start of a new era and it will take lot of time for Australia to get back the glory it has lost.

There’s a question mark over skipper Ricky Ponting’s participation in the fourth Ashes test at Melbourne. The Australian captain has a finger fracture that he picked up during the third test at Perth.

The fourth test begins on Boxing Day and Cricket Australia expect Ponting to be fit in time for the crucial game in which the home side will seek to keep the momentum after the 267-run win in the third test.

However, a stand by for the Aussie captain has been named in New South Wales’ batsman Usman Khwaja. Khwaja has had a brilliant Sheffield Shield season, having scored 598 runs at an impressive average of 74.75. His last knock on Tuesday was a frenetic 78 n.o, in 110 balls. That outing against Queensland was studded with nine fours and three sixes.

However, Khwaja hadn’t covered himself with glory when he faced the English tourists in their warm up game against Hobbart. The Pakistan-born left-hander got 13 and 0, in a game that Strauss’s men won by 10 wickets.

Meanwhile, Ponting is going through the worst batting slump of his career. Though he followed up on his first knock 10, in the opening test, with an unbeaten 51 in the second outing, his run of scores in his next four appearances at the crease is a sad commentary. A duck in the first innings of the second test was followed by 9 runs in the second. The third test match saw the Aussie captain’s poor run continue with 12 and 1 in his two outings in the game.

The biggest day in the Australian cricket calendar saw Australia play India in the famous Boxing Day cricket test at the MCG in Australia. With over 80,000 spectators at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and nearly 200 million cricket fans in India watching the test match this was one of the most watched cricket games of the year.

The Australian cricket crowd is renowned for being very vocal and at times rowdy. However, there is no greater stage for playing cricket than at the MCG on Boxing Day in Melbourne.

As for the cricket match, Australia went into the match with a dilemma as to its bowling line-up. The aussies were unsure as to go with all fast bowlers or to include a spinner in the team. With the retirement of the greatest spin bowler last year in Shane Warne; the Australian team has struggled to replace him. However, Brad Hogg, has stepped up into some form at the right time and as a result was included in the team for his fifth test match.

On day one, Australia went into bat first with Matthew Hayden and Phil Jaques. Both established a fantastic opening partnership before Jaques went out. Hayden went on to score 124 runs on a tough wicket. The Australian middle order collapsed with Ricky Ponting and Hussey going cheaply before the tail wagged for the aussies. Indian bowler Kumble bowled extremely well for India taking five wickets.

On day two, India struggled with the bat and with some very slow batting averaged only two runs per over early on. Sachin Tendulkar, The Master, played a fine innings before going out trying to cut the ball. The remaining Indian batters fell quite easily leaving Australia with a solid first innings lead.

On day three, Australia set out to increase the lead with another good opening stance by the aussie openers. Ricky Ponting fell early on again which was a major success for the Indians before Michael Clarke played a good knock leaving Australia with a lead of 499 runs for the Indians to chase. One of the major issues on day three was the high number of no balls especially at Umpire Billy Bowden’s end.

On day four, it was all about the Australian bowling with the aussies taking some early wickets and thus removing any chance of an Indian win. Brad Hogg and Mitchell Johnson got some valuable wickets for the aussies and both gave themselves a good chance of being selected for the next cricket match at the SCG.

The win for the Australian cricket team results in fifteen successive test wins and they need only one more to tie Steve Waugh’s record. Adam Gilchrist also broke Ian Healy’s wicket keeping record and is now only one away from the magical 400 which he will most likely get in Sydney.

Matthew Hayden was named man of the match after two great batting innings. The Australians once again lead with some great fielding and always kept the pressure on the Indians. The Indians on the other hand let themselves down in the field.

The Indians will need to regroup after this crushing loss. With such a strong batting line-up the Indians couldn’t even reach 200 runs in either innings. It will be interesting to see if the Indian cricket team make any changes especially with the batting line up. The only concern for the Australians will once again be with the bowlers. Will Mitchell Johnson and Brad Hogg stay in the team or will Shaun Tait be awarded his opportunity to bring some heat to the bowling line-up.

The touring team was already leading the series 2-0 but they tried their best to completely whitewash the Australian side. They could not, however, fulfill that dream as they lost some precious wickets quite early in the game. 3 of their openers returning to the pavilion in the morning session alone did nothing to raise their hopes. A further damper was that Jacques Kallis was ousted from the game due to a controversial ruling by the empire when he had scored a mere 4 runs. By tea break with 7 players down for just 193 and no chance of star-batsman Smith coming to bat due to injury, any hope for a draw also started to look most unlikely.

The last pair of Dale Steyn and Makhaya Ntini put up a good fight for almost one and a half hour providing some ray of hope for the disappointed tourists. They defied the now desperate Australian bowlers for long enough to motivate the injured Smith to get the plaster cut off from his broken finger, don a pair of gloves and walk out onto the pitch amid deafening cheers from fans. Steyn was given a leg-before on a delivery by Andrew McDonald with only 9.5 overs remaining till the end of the match.

The South African captain was “absolutely stunned” by the warm welcome he received from his fans when he appeared before them and started to walk down the steps to the pavilion. However, his hopes of an all-out victory against the world no. 1 ranking team could not be fulfilled as he fell victim to a beautiful leg-cutter by Johnson that bowled him out. Smith deserved all the accolade he received as his pain was evident. He was seen wincing with pain after facing the ball a half dozen times but he stood his ground, giving hope to his team-mates and fans all around the world.

Smith was very modest about his brave front claiming “any one of us would have done the same”. He further said that though he would have liked his side to win 2-0 but he was glad his team did not go down without putting up a good fight.

It was never his intention to actually bat, said Smith, but after seeing Dale and Ntini, hecaptain could not stop himself from walking down to the pitch.

Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting was not unimpressed by Smith’s confidence either and he did not waste time congratulating him on his courageous move. He further added that he felt jubilant on winning but losing the series was “not a good feeling and not one we (Aussies) are accustomed to”.

In the meanwhile, Smith will be returning to South Africa to receive treatment for his tennis-elbow and to rest his fractured finger and knuckle, allowing them to heal in time to play some more test cricket in the home series at the end of February.

For the sporty Australian man who loves wide open spaces and beaches, and cricket, a little bit of attention during gift-selection will pay off handsomely. The various occasions for giving gifts to the happy-go-lucky Australian man are Father’s Day, Birthday, Anniversary, and Wedding.

Ways to brighten His summer day!

For his normal Summer day, he would need a nice swim wear, a bait-casting reel for fishing, and a high-quality water-resistant sports watch. A cricket bat with the signature of Ricky Ponting would make the gift set complete for the young cricket loving adult male.

Tell Him how cool a dad He is!

Yes, that is the message you should convey to him on Father’s Day. A cordless electric shaver would ensure a perfect shave. An exquisite perfume spray would contribute significantly to that total ‘well-groomedness’. When he takes a pen out of that fabulous set of Parker pens to put a signature, he would leave a mark on the onlookers. Finally, the day would end on a calm note with a few ounces of his favourite alcoholic beverage measured out in this unique liquor dispenser.

Dazzle Him on his birthday

A Men’s sports watch and a grooming pack consisting of perfume and aftershave are splendid gift ideas for the carefree and fun-loving Australian man. Some men love music and would appreciate it tremendously as a birthday gift. A CD set of Pavarotti’s music would be a fantastic gift.

Make Him look forward to the next anniversary day

Make him feel special by gifting him with the most enchanting anniversary gifts. For instance, this gift hamper containing beer, crackers, chocolates, and other goodies, is simply marvellous! A Casio watch would ensure great fun in the beach and a hammock would be one of the best ways to make sure that the gentleman has a relaxing time in his backyard.

Creative gift ideas for the wedding day

A juice extractor would be appreciated as a very good wedding gift by the modern Australian man, who tends to give more importance to good health than to the traditional notions about the givers and recipients of wedding gifts! You could also consider gifting him with picture frames to display the special moments of the wedding day, a spice rack for the gourmets among men, and scintillating music!

Live Streaming West Indies vs Australia1st Test. Australia will host the West Indies in the first test match of the Frank Worrell Trophy at Gabba in Brisbane on Thursday. It will be Australia’s first test match after their Ashes loss, whereas the first-choice West Indian side will look to put the ghosts of their feud with the cricket board behind them and feature in an international after almost five months.

Despite the return of the top players for the West Indian side, the bookmakers obviously think that the Aussies are in for a cakewalk. The discrepancy could also be attributed to the venue being Australia’s stronghold, on which they have yet to lose a game out of the last twenty that have been played here. Starting 2004, there have been five test matches played in Gabba, and all of them have been won ” comfortably if one may add ” by the hosts.

To add to the Aussie glee, two of their main test match players, Michael Clarke and Brad Haddin are back into the side after a prolonged absence due to injuries. Ricky Ponting continues to be the favourite to be the best batsman for his side, with offering 3/1 for it, whereas Simon Katich is up there with his captain 4/1 for him to top-score for Australia.

Michael Hussey’s place in the test team had been in doubt, but his performances in the fifty overs format over the last couple of tournaments would have eased off some pressure. It remains to be seen whether the Oval century in an Ashes losing cause prolongs his test career in the same manner as it had for Mathew Hayden in 2005!

West Indies almost lost captain Chris Gayle for this game to his mom’s illness, but all seems to be well for now, and a jet-lagged Gayle will take the field. There will be obvious rustiness and that could be one reason, he is third behind Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnaraine Chanderpaul to top score for his side. However, there is a chance that Sarwan misses out playing the game due to his back injury, which will mean that Travis Dowlin to be the best batsman for his side) could continue his remarkable run in the side. He had earlier been chosen after the main guys had opted out of the series against Bangladesh due to the issues with the board.

The one batsman to watch out for will be Adrian Barath. The 19-year old has yet to play a single international game, but had captured the imagination of the cricket fans around the world in the Champions League T20 earlier this year. While that was relatively easier than opening against Australia at Brisbane, he has also been tipped by the great Brian Lara to be the one for the future. The series should reveal the veracity of Lara’s claim to the fullest!

Ground:
Perth: The WACA has always carried the tag of being called the fastest wicket in the world but over the years the batsmen seem to have worked out the conditions well, so a number of high scoring encounters have been witnessed in the recent past in both Tests and ODIs. With the character of the wicket changing gradually over the years, the batsmen have also adjusted themselves accordingly, so we should expect a high scoring encounter.

Team News:
Australia: Whatever the Aussies touch at the moment seems to be turning into gold. They just can’t seem to put a foot wrong. The balance which the team looked to have lost has suddenly been replenished. With Watson firing at the top of the order consistently, and also chipping in with handy spells with the ball, the focus has suddenly shifted on the likes of James Hopes, who would be replacing Watson for the Perth double header. The all-rounder who has been out of favour for quite a while now, will be looking to reinforce his position in the team with a good display with both bat and ball. Shaun Marsh looks to have got back his rhythm at the top level once again, with some decent outings in the 3 matches so far.

Pakistan: The Pakistani camp at the moment resembles a city in ruins, recovering from the shock of the IPL snub and the humiliation at the hands of the Aussies. The blame game has begun and allegations are flying thick and fast against the captain and the coach. If the word ‘divided’ had illustrated with a practical example, the Pakistan side would prove to be the perfect candidate. While the debate rages on whether the PCB did the right thing by fuelling the rumors that the captaincy would be changed after the ODI series, Afridi ” the vice-captain on tour and reportedly the next captain-in-waiting ” has come out with claims that the team is a divided entity with players playing for a place in the side rather than as a unit.

Stats:
If history is anything to go by, then Pakistan must surely be grinning from ear to ear after reading this. These 2 teams have played 4 ODIs at Perth, with Pakistan winning on all 4 occasions.

Shahid Afridi is 2 catches away from reaching the landmark of 100 catches in ODIs.

Teams:
Australia squad:: Shaun Marsh, Brad Haddin(w), Ricky Ponting(c), Michael Clarke, Cameron White, Michael Hussey, James Hopes, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Hauritz, Ryan Harris, Clint McKay, Adam Voges, Peter Siddle

Pakistan squad:: Salman Butt, Kamran Akmal(w), Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf(c), Umar Akmal, Fawad Alam, Shahid Afridi, Naved-ul-Hasan, Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal, Mohammad Asif, Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Aamer, Imran Farhat, Iftikhar Anjum, Khalid Latif, Sarfraz Ahmed

Pakistan will play their only T20I against Australia tomorrow, Friday, February 05, 2010, to be played at Melbourne. Shoaib Malik will be captaining the Pakistan side for the match.

It was pretty unfortunate that Shahid Afridi was found guilty of ball tampering during the match against Australia (5th ODI). Pakistan cricket and controversies are inseparable; looks like. Afridi was slapped of a match ban and so Shoaib Malik had to be named Pakistan’s captain. He is the 3rd captain during the series and the PCB might be embarrassed for such developments.

With that being said, Australia although hasn’t reigned supremacy in the T20 format of game, still the confidence of winning the Test series (3-0) and the ODI series (5-0) and achieving the distinction of clean sweep wins in the other 2 formats of the game should send the team as favorites into the match.

Pakistan Chief selector Qasim remarks, “after the clean sweep in the Test as well as the one-day series in Australia, I don’t think it is my moral duty to remain the chief selector. I am very disappointed, like millions of Pakistanis. As I am responsible for the selection of the team, I quit from my post.”

Looks like Pakistan team is under severe pressure from fans and the board and they will have to pray for a miracle and win tomorrow to save them from grace. The match result is easily predictable but you never know the opposite may happen in this short form of the game. Pakistan hopes against that hope.
