I am writing before the final Test at Sydney. The Ashes has already been decided and England has achieved what was impossible to think of a decade ago.
Ashes is the oldest cricket rivalry between England and Australia. The series has always caught the attention of the people and media. It is the oldest rivalry in the Cricketing world.
Ashes 2010 started with England as the favorites but it was never said that Australia was ruled out. Beating Australia at home requires more than just tag of favorite. The series started and the first match result forced many to rethink. The result was a draw but the way both team fought it was hard to pick the favorite. The match ended in a positive note for England and this positivity was reflected in the second Test with England wining but Australia fought back and won the third Test.
All was set for Boxing Day Test and momentum was with Australia. The match delayed due to rain but when it started it produced one of the blackest day for the Australian cricket. First they were bowled out for just 98 and they failed to get any wicket on the first day.
Channel Nine commentators were trying to reduce the intensity of damage by stating again and again that when England would come to bat it would be as difficult for them and Australia would fight back after bundling out at 98 but they were proved wronged and awfully wrong. The inability of the Kangaroos to dislodge the Lions was humiliating and this humiliation reached its pinnacle when Australia lost the match by the margin of an innings and English players danced on the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The result of England as a victorious side was expected before the series started but it was not thought by anyone that Australia would surrender in such a poor fashion. The result is the start of a new era and it will take lot of time for Australia to get back the glory it has lost.
