Australia are the defending champions and India, by virtue of being the hosts, one of the favourites to win the ICC World Cup 2011 edition.

India have played some of their best cricket against Australia, whether in tests or in ODIs. So it will be interesting to analyze how India have fared against the four-time champions, ahead of the tenth edition of the World Cup.

The two teams have met each other on 9 occasions at the WCup. Australia have won 7 of those matches, while India only have 2 wins against the Kangaroos.

The first of India’s two wins over Australia came in the 1983 World Cup that India lifted, beating the West Indies in the final.

India batted first in the 60-over match at Chelmsford, and scored 247 in 55.5 overs. In reply, Australia were bundled out for 129, giving India a massive 118-run victory. The wreckers in chief were Madan Lal and Roger Binny, each taking 3 wickets. Binny, who scored an unbeaten 21 in India’s innings, was Man of the Match. Incidentally, this was the second of two group matches against Australia, in the 1983 edition.

India recorded their only other World Cup over Australia in 1987, a tournament that the Aussies won, beating England in a close final.

Set 290 to win by India at Delhi, Australia could muster just 233, handing India a 56 run victory. For India, the unlikely bowling hero was Azharuddin, whose 3/19 added to the 54 not out that he scored in India’s innings was sufficient to get him the MOM award.

So Australia has lost the Ashes and whilst this might be synonymous with the end of the world for Australians, a series of problems await their attention.

Mike Hussey, also known as ‘Mr Cricket’, began 2008 with a Test Match average of 80.56. To put this in context only 4 players in the history of the game have finished their careers with an average of over 60 and only one of them (Donald Bradman) had an average of over 90.

Currently, Hussey’s batting average has slumped to 52.65, which suggests his cricketing powers are in terminal decline. His fall from grace has been punctuated by the occasional Test Match hundred, his most recent coming in his last innings at the Oval . The Australian selectors will be debating his place in the side and I believe there are three points of concern.

Firstly, at the age of 34, Mike Hussey does not have time on his side. Anything the selectors hope they can get from the batsmen must be achieved in the here and now. Technical deficiencies that may have been exposed in his game over the last few years must be addressable with slight tweaking.

Secondly, Hussey’s poor batting form is not an isolated problem. Currently, Michael Clarke is batting at number 5 and is widely regarded as one of the world’s premier batsmen. His phenomenal displays in the Ashes, whilst his side were capitulating around him, are testament to this.

However, at number 5 you are simply responding to events rather than dictating the terms. Clarke cannot bat at number 3 since Ponting is a class act in this position, so that leaves number 4? When Mike Hussey was hitting a hundred every innings, exempting Clarke from this batting position was justifiable. Since this is no longer the case, Australia are at serious risk of not fully utilizing their most in form player.

Finally, and most importantly, the enormous faith the selectors have given to Hussey is contrary to Australian cricketing philosophy. Australia are renown for their hard line with players, most famously when the legendary Waugh brothers were dropped from the one day team in 2002.

Hussey is now perilously close to living on reputation and any closer will certainly undermine the messages the selectors try to send out to players. If it were up to me, Hussey would go. This may be harsh but Australia need to think long term.

The 2005 Ashes series captured the interest of England and even managed to briefly push football off the back pages of the country’s newspapers. The 2-1 victory was England’s first triumph over the Australians since 1987 and, ignoring the series in Australia 18 months later, Andrew Strauss will be hoping to lead his side to a second successive home win later this summer.

Both sides will be much changed from their 2005 look. Strauss will return – this time as captain – and with 2005 veterans Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood and Andrew Flintoff in his charge, he will be looking to them to help the newcomers who have no experience against the Australians. On the other side of the world, Australia still have Ricky Ponting in charge but have lost several key players in Adam Gilchrist, Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Matthew Hayden. However, in Phillip Hughes, Mitchell Johnson and Peter Siddle they seem to have found readymade replacements while England are still struggling to find a wicketkeeper to adequately replace Alec Stewart and a top class spinner.

More talked about than the change in personnel, however, is the change in grounds used for the 2009 Ashes. Of the five venues played at in 2005, three remain the same – Lord’s, Edgbaston and the Oval (where England lost, won and drew) – but the other two have been dropped. These grounds – Old Trafford and Trent Bridge – are not only steeped in history but they were both games in 2005 that were in England’s favour – in Manchester, England were one wicket away from victory while they enforced the follow on and won comprehensively in Nottingham.

With these two grounds out, two have had to come in to complete the numbers. Yorkshire’s Headingley, another old favourite, has returned to the test circuit after redevelopment but the biggest shock – especially as it’s going to host the opening test match – is the inclusion of Glamorgan’s Sophia Gardens. The Cardiff stadium has yet to host a five-day international although it has hosted one-day games, most notably Bangladesh’s shock victory over Australia in 2005. However, there have been issues with drainage – that were hopefully sorted over the winter months – and the stadium is smaller than all those used in 2005, all of which were sold out.

Tickets for the npower Ashes are again in high demand and each of the five venues are expected to be sold out for every day of play as England look to recreate the success of their historic 2005 win.

Watch Australia vs Pakistan 1st Test Live Streaming This Christmas Eve has much more to offer than expected. The clash of cricketing giants is about to take place. The three Mobile Test Series will include three matches between Australia and Pakistan which will begin on the Boxing Day, 26th of this month. The matches are to be played at Melbourne, Sydney and Hobart respectively. These matches are very crucial for both the teams as winning this series will result in moving up in the chart of world ranking, especially for the ‘Aussies’ as they have received severe setbacks as the result of their loss to South Africa and India and lost their no.1 spot in the current year.

Both the teams embraced themselves to the highest level. Mohammad Yousuf, captain of Pakistan cricket team looks confident and is looking forward to an exceptional performance from his teamin spite of many of his players down with injuries. Besides, other players have displayed an exceptional performance lately – especially Mohammad Sami and Tanvir Ahmed in their Club Matches
