Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been appointed captain of India for three one-day’s against Australia in home series. Dhoni, who is the captain of India’s Twenty20 squad in South Africa, had been tipped to take over as captain since Rahul Dravid announced his resignation.

The captain for test team is yet to be announce by BCCI and if reports are to believed than test captaincy is certainly going to Sachin Tendulkar. That means India will also follow the two captain system for the time being.

Two captain system will be adopted first time by India although it has been successful in Australia when in 2002 Ricky Ponting was made One Day captain and Steve Waugh was test captain.

Now days England is also following the same system. Michel Vaughan is test captain and Paul Collingwood is handling One Day side.

Dhoni, who was the vice-captain of the ODI team on the tour to England, has made his mark since his arrival in international cricket in December 2004. He has scored 2477 runs in 84 ODIs at an average of 44.23 and a strike rate of 96.26. His highest score, an unbeaten 183 against Sri Lanka in 2006, is a record for a wicketkeeper and also the record for the most runs scored by a batsman while chasing. Dhoni had also occupied the top batsman’s spot in the ICC one-day rankings in April 2006.

In world twenty20 Dhoni has also proved his skills as skipper especially in match against Pakistan. But that is twenty20, ODI is totally different ball game.

On other hand if Tendulkar accepts test captaincy then it will be his third inning as Captain of India. He has already led India in 25 Tests winning four, drawing nine and losing 12. In the ODIs, too, he does not have a great captaincy record.

Out of the 73 matches that Tendulkar led India in, the team lost 43, winning 23 other matches while six ended without a result with one tie.

When last time Tendulkar resigned from captaincy he said that he will never accept captaincy again. But now he looks like ready for it.

But now the question is will this two captain system work in India. In India players are stars and it will not be easy for Dhoni to handle them especially when he is inexperienced in handling the captaincy.
Another problem which might come across Dhoni will be coordinating with giants like Tendulkar, Ganguly and Dravid on one side and youngsters on other side.

For Tendulkar the biggest problem will be to get support from senior players. As reports are coming that seniors were not supporting Dravid, the same problem will arise for Tendulkar also.

But looking at positive side the two captaincy system, it may also come good as it will give ample time to groom Dhoni as good leader.

According to ex cricketer Navjot Sidhu if we adopt every thing from Australian system then why not two captain policy. Australia had proved that it was a good move and that’s why Ponting is the best captain today.

Well we as Indian cricket fan also hope that this system may work and we will have a good and aggressive, thinking captain who will lead India in 2011 world cup.

Moving on from football, to India’s passion, my joy and the game of eleven fools (as George Bernard Shaw described it) cricket. I think a very few people in India do not know what cricket is, and the rest constitute the millions of fools who are ardent followers of the Men in Blue (the BCCI Indian Cricket team marketed to the core). Cricket for many Indians (including me) is larger than life and the basis of life itself. Cricket is to India what football is to Brazil. Ask a true Indian cricket fan what he/she longs, lives for and cherishes the most and he/she will say “To watch India win the match!” (accompanied with a big smile).

One of the happiest moments of my life was to watch India make it to the World Cup finals in 2003. Unfortunately the 23rd March 2003 also turned out to be one of the saddest, apparently Ricky Ponting (Punter) had other plans, and as his nickname suggests better placed bets. A few mistakes by the Indian cricket team captained very ably by Sourav Ganguly (Dada,Prince of Calcutta, God of the off-side) saw me, and many Indians, on that fateful day reduced to tears, in our “Men In Blue” Tri-Colour painted T-Shirts and faces. Heartbroken we wiped the tears off and hoped we would get to see that moment of glory which the generation before us had witnessed at Lords in 1983. That moment where the underdogs, Kapil Dev’s Indian cricket team won us the world cup against the then invincible West Indian Cricket team.

Cricket my love, my passion and a truly beautiful game. I say that because, there are a few things in life, more beautiful for an Indian cricket fan than that lovely Sachin Tendulkar straight drive (down the ground), or that immaculate Rahul Dravid square cut and not to forget the perfectly timed drives on the off-side by the God of the off-side Sourav Ganguly. Makes cricket seem a touch romantic (Yuvraj makes cricket literally romantic, to his female fans, he is also great at fielding and very good at batting, sorry ladies).

It is often said Indians get too emotional about cricket (I am accused of the same), well the accusations are correct. I mean people do get emotional in life at some point of time. Life without cricket is unimaginable, sometimes I wonder why? Then I remember that cricket flows through my veins and I inherited the passion (like many Indians). I remember my life in two phases, one before the 1992 World Cup and the other after it,courtesy Dad (though he does not admit it, he loves cricket as much, maybe more). Cricket might not be played in the Gentleman’s outfit anymore but has lost little of its captivating magic.

The game of Cricket is not as popular as football, but in countries where the game is played, it is very big. Cricket in India is a huge affair and fans are crazy about the game. In fact players of the India cricket team are given the status of gods. Craze for the game is such that you will find the game being played in every nook and corner of the country. If there is any spare space at any place, cricket is the one game that one can find being played there. As far as the Indian cricket team is concerned, this is one team in the world that is always under tremendous pressure, so you can understand how difficult it is to be the part of India cricket team.

The current India team that is taking part in the world cup looks well balanced and if they are able to perform well, the team can well go on to win the world cup. Indian cricket in recent times have been performing well in patches, but the Indian cricket team has not been consistent in their performance. In fact consistent well performance by the team is one thing which has been lacking with the Indian cricket team. The Indian cricket team has been hiring foreign cloches to help them and John Wright was the first foreign coach to be appointed to help the India team. The current coach Greg Chappell of Australia has made use of many new game plans to help the India cricket team to win matches.

The one thing which has been hampering the India Cricket team is their performance outside the sub continent. They play like tigers at home and it is almost impossible for any team to beat them in their own backyard. In fact the former Australian captain Steve Waugh has gone one record team has gone on record saying that India was the final frontier and he would like to capture it before he retires. Sadly Steve has not been able to do this before his retirement. But the bottom line remains that performance of the India cricket team needs to improve drastically when they tour other countries.

The Indian cricket team has won the world cup only once and given the craze that fans have for the game, the team deserves to bring back the world cup. The players of the India cricket team owe this to their fans. The Indian cricket team that has been selected this time to represent the India cricket team in the world cup looks a very balanced side with the right mix of youth and experience. While youngsters like Dhoni, Pathan, Yuvraj and Munaf Patel give the team the much needed aggression and agility. On the other hand player like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid provide the India cricket team with the much needed balance for a cricket team to succeed at the highest levels.

The prospects of many teams in this world cup looks bright like the Indian cricket team. One thing that can work in favor of the India cricket team is the presence of the bets batsman in the world Sachin Tendulkar. Well it is not that every time the India cricket team can boast of having such a great batsman in its team.
