Boxing News

Moseley was scheduled to fight Andre Berto on January 30, but due to the tragic earthquake that hit Haiti last week, Berto canceled the fight due to the fact that he lost a lot of loved ones and is not ready to fight at this time. If Mayweather and Moseley can agree on terms it will become the biggest upcoming fight in boxing today.

NBA News

Former Miami Heat center Alonzo Mourning and current Heat star Dwayne Wade have teamed up to help raise money for the citizens effected by the devastating earthquake that just hit Haiti last week. So far through donations from fellow star athletes like Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony, Michael Beasley, Kevin Durant, and Chris Paul, they have raised over $800,000 and still looking to raise more.

NBA Slam dunk contest finalist

Even though Lebron James announced last year during the dunk contest that he would put his name in for this year’s event, he just officially announced he would not be competing again this year. But without James the contest still has last years winner NY Knicks Nate Robinson returning along with the Charlotte Hornets Gerald Wallace, and the LA Lakers Shannon Brown. The fourth and final spot will be decided by a dunk off between the Detroit Pistons Eric Gordon and the Toronto raptors Demar DeRozan.

Stephon Marbury who last played with the Boston Celtics is leaving the NBA to head overseas for the Chinese Basketball Association. Marbury will be playing for club Shanxi and signed a small contract in order to promote his signature Starbury shoes in China.

College Basketball News

After taking the number one spot from Kansas this week the Texas Longhorns have already been dethroned by the ninth ranked Kansas State Wildcats. In what was suppose to be a battle of big men somebody forgot to relay that to the Longhorns whose team combined for a woeful 36% shooting from the field and an awful 9 of 22 from the free throw line. Even though the Wildcats did not shoot much better from the field, they were able to hit 20 of their 32 free throws on they’re way to a 71-62 victory at home.

In other top 25 news the fifth ranked Syracuse Orange were able to hold of a pesky Notre Dame who lived up to their Fighting Irish name in a close game. Even though the outcome was 84-71 the game was a lot closer then it looks. Irish received good output from Tim Ambromaitis 26 points, Tory Jackson 15 assist, and All American candidate Luke Harongody who finished with 31 points and 14 rebounds. But the Orange was just to much in the end thanks to the depth of their team they were able to outlast Notre Dame at the end to move to an impressive 16-1 overall record and 5-1 in the Big East.

Women’s College Basketball

The University of Connecticut Huskies women’s Basketball team improved to an impressive 18-0 record this year. The lady huskies are on a 57 game winning streak and just dominated seventh ranked Duke easily winning 81-48. It looked close at halftime with the Huskies only up by ten points, but the second half proved to much for Duke as they looked overwhelmed playing against arguably the best ever women’s team in college basketball history.

A penalty shot here, a gunshot there. A boundary here, a bomb blast there. Somehow, these unrelated acts have fallen on common grounds on several unfortunate occasions. Sporting events across the world have become soft targets for terrorists to do what they seek to do ” terrorize masses, and gain adequate attention for their causes in the process.

The 1972 Munich massacre of 11 Israeli athletes by the Black September terrorists is an incident that refuses to fade away from public memory. And in more recent times, the frequent bombings in unnervingly close proximity to sport events have successfully created terror in the minds of players and fans alike. So what really is the motive of creating a bloodbath in the midst of a ceremonious, joyous event? The answer lies somewhere in the nature of the very contrast!!

Terrorists are now looking to capitalize on the magnum scale of sport events, particularly those like the Olympics or the Commonwealth Games, to send across a message far and wide, and to push their cause across to people from every part of the world by attacking an assortment of representatives. Several and more terror outfits seek mileage through such acts, and terror cannot be sp easily than when it is struck at the heart of an enthralled crowd. Volatile nations like Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and even India, are some of the most unsafe destinations to conduct sport events at, and are extremely vulnerable to terror attacks, which are targeted chiefly toward popular sports like cricket. The separate attacks on the New Zealand and Sri Lankan cricket teams on Pakistani grounds drive home the point. The scale of popularity of a sport assumes great importance for such planned terror strikes, and with cricket virtually being a religion on both sides of the border, such acts can hurt indefinitely.

Many times, the main motive lies in undermining the image of the host nation, in terms of revealing its security lapses and glitches. In these cases, it is usually indigenous, anti-establishment terror groups that look to gain from such acts. More often than not, it is the fans who become sitting ducks for terrorists, and the recent bomb blast that ripped through a gathering of football fans in Uganda ascertains the trend unequivocally. So, even as the FIFA World Cup ended with a bang, the real bang literally sniffed out many innocent lives.

In the light of such bleak events, it is every nation’s prerogative to provide assiduous security to sport events, and to ensure that innocent lives are not lost at the time of such vigour and enthusiasm. With the Commonwealth Games already falling short on many other accounts, security becomes the biggest concern, and the Capital has always been susceptible to terror attacks. So even while the whole nation is up in arms over the shoddy hygiene conditions and half-baked preparations at the Games, the authorities must not lose focus from cementing effective security measures first.

And just as sportsmen need elaborate security, the safety of fans must also not be left unattended. Stringent and responsible security must necessarily be paramount at an event like this, and India is just not ready to face another terror strike.

Throughout the history of cricket there have been those that were special, who were slightly different to their fellow cricketers and made the crowd sit up whenever they arrived on the pitch. Of course every game has its heroes and cricket is no exception. And every nation has its own cricketing legends that they believe were better than those of other teams. This article will introduce you to 9 of the world’s great cricketers from past and present.

Imran Kahn was a great Pakistani cricketer who played at the highest level for over twenty years from his debut in 1971. He was a great all rounder who led the Pakistan team to their first world cup just before he retired. Always elegant in both action and speech he was one of the best all-rounders that the game has ever had. He is now a politician in Pakistan and the leader of a major political party. He played in 88 tests with a batting average of 37.69. He took 362 wickets with an excellent bowling average of 22.81.

Shane Warne is an Australian spin bowler who is one of, if not the, greatest spin bowler the game has ever seen. He was born in 1969 in Victoria and has played test cricket since 1990, retiring in 2007. He has taken more test wickets than any other player in history. He was also the first player to take more than 600 test wickets. He played in 140 tests and has taken 685 wickets with a bowling average of 25.25.

Gary Sobers was a highly talented cricketer who was born in Barbados in 1936. He played 93 tests for the West Indies and scored an impressive 8032 runs. He had a batting average of 57.78. He was also a very good slow left arm bowler, taking 235 test wickets, with an average of 34.03. He is best known for being the first batsman ever to score six sixes in one over in 1968 in a first class cricket match while playing for Notts against Glamorgan.

Ian Botham was a great English all-rounder. He was the scourge of bowlers with his prodigious batting ability and he was just as adept as a fast medium paced bowler. He was born in Cheshire in 1955 and played mainly for Somerset. He was very much a true all rounder as he was as good at bowling as batting. He played in 102 test matches and scored 5200 runs, with an average of 33.34 and he took 383 wickets with an average of 28.40.

WG Grace is thought by many to be the most influential cricketer the game has ever seen. He was born in 1848 at a time when cricket was not the massive sport that it is today. He is one of the reasons, with his great batting ability, that cricket became so popular. When he was out first ball at a match once, he refused to go telling the umpire that, “the crowd are here to watch me bat and not to watch you umpire!”. There were not many test matches then so he played only 22 and scored 1098 runs with an average of 32.29. He took 9 wickets with an average of 26.22. This average is low even though he was playing into his late fifties!

Allan Border was born in 1955 in Sydney and was Australian captain. He still has the world record for the greatest number of uninterrupted test matches. He also had the record, at the time, for the most runs in test matches at 11174 in 156 tests. He was also one of the most prolific hitters of centuries with 27 in test matches. He also took 39 wickets with an average of 39.10.

Shaun Pollock is a South African medium fast bowler who is well known for his accuracy and reliability. He is also a very good batsman who has scored over 3406 runs in 100 test matches with an average of 31.24. He has taken 395 wickets at an average of 23.25. He is South Africa’s most prodigious wicket taker in both one day international and test matches.

Viv Richards is one of the all time greats of West Indian cricket. He was a very successful captain to one of the best West Indian sides ever. He was a powerful batsman and scored an average of 50.23, scoring 8450 runs in 121 matches. He only lost 8 matches in the 50 that he captained.

Don Bradman was born in 1908 in New South Wales and was not only the best Australian but is thought, by many, to be the best batsman of all time. His batting skill was so good that the England cricket team in the 1928-1929 tests resorted to bowling at the batsmen rather than the wickets in order to try to win. This was known as the bodyline series. The dispute from this was so bad that it nearly caused a diplomatic dispute between England and Australia. He played in 52 tests and scored 6996 runs so he had an incredible average of 99.94. These statistics make him the best batsman ever.

Bangladesh vs New Zealand 1st ODI Live Stream, Live Score, Cricket Highlights 2010
Date: Oct 05, 09:00 IST, Venue: Shere Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka

Today, thousands of Bangladeshi people will surely celebrate the victory of their national cricket team against New Zeeland in a warm-up game in Bridgetown. Bangladesh defeated New Zealand by 2 wickets.Bangladesh vs New Zealand Live Stream Highlights

This is a historic win for Bangladesh and Bangladeshi fans would love to see their team defeating some other countries in World Cup Cricket 2007. Mashrafe Mortaza was the hero of the match in the end. However, earlier, A Razzak took 4 Kiwi wickets for just 26 runs from his 10 overs. Bangladesh is in Pool B along with India, Sri Lanka and Bermuda. Now, we have to see if Bangladesh can cause a major upset in this group.

On the other hand, this is a shocking defeat for New Zealand. New Zealand just white washed Australia a few days ago in ODI series.

Stuff reported:

They were beaten by Bangladesh by two wickets with an over to spare at the 3Ws Stadium just outside Bridgetown after tail-ender Mashrafe Mortaza blasted three sixes in a whirlwind 30 from 14 balls to chase down a 227 target.

The result stopped New Zealand’s pre-World Cup momentum in its tracks. They had arrived in the Caribbean with confidence flying high after beating world champions Australia 3-0 only last month.

“There’s not a lot we can say, I guess it’s a result that just shakes you up,” Fleming told a news conference.

New Zealand will be hosted by Bangladesh in the first ODI of the five match series at Mirpur in Dhaka. This is the first instance of the two side playing a five-game series and will see the Kiwis wanting to win their first whitewash 5-0.

The last time the Kiwis were in Bangladesh, they had lost one ODI, but gone on to win the series 2-1. They had won the previous series before this one 3-0.

New Zealand will welcome the return of the captain Daniel Vettori and wicket-keeper Brendon McCullum. Both the players were out of the side on a paternity leave and will look to restamp their authority on the game.

Jesse Ryder also returns to the side, while Ross Taylor will look to be the main batsman for the side.

The Bangladesh team will be without Tamim Iqbal and that would be a huge blow for the team. What should work in their favor is the fact that the Bangladeshis will be led by Mortaza and Shakib will have no pressure on his shoulder

South Africa Cricket | Women Are Picking Up The Game Of Cricket

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

Cricket, hereto regarded as a gentlemen’s game cannot be called as in the future as the lovely ladies have made sufficient inroads to ensure that the Women’s International Cricket Council officially integrated to come under the umbrella of the Cricket’s governing body – the ICC.

This was officially announced at the conclusion of the eighth Women’s World Cup tournament held in South Africa, by the President of the ICC Ehsan Mani. Mani announced that the International Women’s Cricket Council had merged with the ICC to help drive the development of the sport among Women as well. For over two years the Women’s International Cricket Council and the ICC have been discussing this issue. The integration of women’s cricket is was formally recognised by the ICC at the Annual Conference in June this year, with the first formal ICC Women’s Cricket Committee meeting also held at the same time.

The ICC Women’s Cricket committee is headed by Betty Timmer, a former Vice Chairman of the International Women’s Cricket Association. She will make recommendations to the ICC on the development of Women’s Cricket around the world. ICC President Mani conveyed his sincere thanks to the outgoing IWCC President Christine Brierley and the many dedicated volunteers who have supported the development of the women’s game over the years.

In Asia, India is the first South Asian country to participate in Women’s International cricket. Women have been playing big league cricket in India since 1973. Another South Asian Country Sri Lanka officially formed its Women’s Cricket Association in 1996. The Sri Lanka Women Crickets took wing to India to participate in the Women’s World Cup held in India. Similarly Pakistan and Bangladesh are the other two South Asian countries to form Women’s Cricket Associations. By now, all these four South Asian nations have participated in International Women’s World Cup matches. It is also interesting to note that the World cup final between Australia and England held at the Eden Gardens, Calcutta in India in 1997 drew a crowd in excess of 80,000 spectators. This augurs well for the Women cricketers as this will prompt the sponsoring companies to come forward.

Air India and the Indian Railways have supported Women’s cricket in India in a big way. Air India has, perhaps, the finest women’s cricket team in the country. Apart from the Nationals, the other major women’s tournaments in India are the Rani Jhansi trophy and the Indira Priyadarshini trophy.

However, we are yet to see individual Member countries include Women cricketers in their governing bodies. Questions have been raised whether this will ever happen considering the rigid rules that are prevailing in most of these governing bodies in various countries.

2010 Cricket World Cup | Sports And Gaming

Monday, September 20th, 2010

The 2010 Asia Cup is the tenth edition of the Asia Cup Cricket tournament which was started on 15 June 2010 till 24 June 2010 in Sri Lanka. The track at Dambulla Cricket Stadium is one of the few in the world which assist the bowling and will be ones to watch out for the batsmen. In the past nine Asia Cup tournaments, that have been played so far, the India and Sri Lanka has won each four times, whereas Pakistan has been once. The four teams in this edition’s tournament are India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. In the last edition, UAE and Hong Kong had also participated in the tournament, but the time meant that only four teams will play each other once before the top two make it through to the final.

The Asia Cup trophy is made up of a combination of silver, gold, copper and brass with a silver finish with mat and gloss finish. It stands to communicate the strength, purity, humility and persistence that not only represent the four metals but also the four participating nations. Each team will play once in the group stages. The top 2 teams based on points at the end of the group stages will meet each other in a one-off final. Each win will yield 4 points while a tie/no result will yield 1 point. The 2010 Asia Cup trophy was unveiled by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Shahid Afridi, Kumar Sangakkara and Shakib Al Hasan in the presence of Vikas Jain, Business Director, Micromax and Ashraful Huq, CEO – Asian CricketCouncil.

This time Pakistan was happy with the return of Shoaib Malik and Shoaib Akhtar. But Pakistan’s problem was their batting in this tournament, which looks a little fragile. Their bowling was strong enough but missing Umar Gul, so this time they lost the chance to get into the finals. India’s Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh missed in this tournament. Saurabh Tiwary played first time in this international cricket and that was an exciting incident for the Indians. But India too played well and entered the finals. From the beginning, Sri Lanka had a biggest chance to enter the Asia Cup cricket finals as they played very well from the starting. The way Bangladesh lost the matches showed that it was difficult for them to enter into the finals. Sri Lanka and India entered the Tenth Asia Cup Cricket finals and this will be the 18th clash since the start of 2009.

Both Sri Lanka and India already guaranteed themselves in the final of the Asia Cup on June 24. Strangely enough neither of these teams has met in the Asia Cup thus far instead they have both booked their final spots. India made light work of the Tigers in their opening game romping to a six wicket victory on the back of a superior bowling effort restricting their opponents to just 167. Sri Lanka were similarly ruthless against their pool opponents ” they managed to stave off a Shahid Afridi led batting resurgence then put on their own masterclass with the willow against Bangladesh posting 312. Let’s watch the finals tomorrow and hope for the best.

2010 Sport Event | Tips On Getting 2010 World Cup Soccer Tickets

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

If you missed out on the first phase of tickets for the World Cup, phase 2 started May 4th 2009. In just a few days, over 150,000 tickets have been sold in the second phase. Now is the time to get your tickets for this historical event. For the first time ever, the world cup will be held in South Africa. It is the first time the tournament has been hosted by the Confederation of African Football.

So, how do you get your tickets? If you do not live in South Africa:

* You can apply online using your credit card.
* You can print a downloadable application and fax it or mail it to the world cup ticket centre in Switzerland.

If you live in South Africa:

* Paper application forms are available at all First Bank branches in South Africa.
* Online using your credit card

You can also try using an online auction site to get your tickets. Some people buy their tickets, and for whatever reason realize that they will not be able to attend. Be careful, though, and buy from a reputable buyer. Also, make sure they have not inflated the price. You don’t want to pay twice the price of what they are worth.

There are going to be a total of five phases, so if you miss phase one and two, you can buy in phase three, four or five. Phase 3 will begin December 5th 2009 and end January 22nd, 2010. Phase 4 will begin February 9th 2010 and end April 7th 2010. Phase 5 will begin April 15th and end July 11th. Tickets are subject to availability, so if you are thinking of buying your tickets at the last minute, you may find your preferred categories and matches have been sold out.

There are two types of tickets available; Match tickets, and Team Specific Ticket series. (TSTs).

Match tickets are individual tickets, and are available for all matches.

Team Specific Ticket series are ticket strips to follow the national team of your choice. You do not have to root for your specific nationality.

Keep these points in mind when applying for tickets:

Opening match tickets are generally more expensive than the other group matches, because the opening match includes the opening ceremonies.

You must attend each match that you have purchased tickets for.

You can apply for up to four tickets per match with a maximum of seven matches; or you can apply for a maximum of four Team Specific Ticket Series for your team of choice.

Once you apply for the tickets, you will need to provide your personal information such as your first and last name, date of birth, nationality and passport reference. You will also need to provide your home address, contact details and payment details.

You cannot purchase tickets for different matches being played on the same day.

Generally, expect to spend anywhere from $100 to $900, depending on the matches and categories you apply for. If the matches are anything like the most recent World Cups, it will be worth every penny.
